For a two-piece band, Quasi sure does make a lot of noise. Their second CD, R&B Transmogrification, is filled with indie-pop gems buried under layers of textured sound, bringing to mind the best work of Up labelmates Built to Spill. Sam Coomes' nasal vocals, also reminiscent of Built to Spill's Doug Marsch, are often plaintive, but never dull. Using a heavily distorted "Rocksichord" -- an electronic keyboard invented to approximate the sound of a harpsichord -- as its central instrument, R&B Transmogrification combines a retro feel with a healthy helping of grunge, sort of the Doors meets Pavement. Best of all are the songs, which include "Ballad of Mechanical Man" (which uses the lyrics "soon we'll all be dead" as its creepy, catchy hook) and "Birds Eyes View" (written by drummer Janet Weiss of Sleater-Kinney), which recalls the work of the Magnetic Fields and Brian Eno. ~ Lee Zukor
Quasi: Sam Coomes (vocals, various instruments); Janet Weiss (drums).

Option (9-10/97, p.113) - "...the gloomy subject matter never sinks these spirited indie rock ditties, which are powered by cool, fuzzed-out keyboards recorded way in the red....it's got a handful of dark, delicious pop moments you'll want to savor..." R&B Transmogrification album
$31.59 Each CD in this box set is also available separately on Merge (166, 167 & 168).
Originally envisioned as a 100-song stage revue but cut down to 69 songs (as Stephin Merritt explained, "That was the first love-related number I could think of") and released on three CDs under the name of the first of Merritt's many musical projects (also including the 6ths, Future Bible Heroes, and the Gothic Archies), 69 LOVE SONGS is a sprawling masterpiece of alternately romantic and rueful tunes. Where each previous Magnetic Fields albums had a specific musical identity, 69 LOVE SONGS leaps casually through genres that include show tunes, jazz, country, punk, techno, and '80s-style synth pop, somehow managing throughout to sound like no one but the Magnetic Fields. Though the three CDs were originally released as a box set enclosed in a special slipcase with an exclusive ...
| | Built To Spill There's Nothing Wrong With Love CD (1994)
R&B Transmogrification CD music
$10.15 With THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH LOVE, Idaho native and former Treepeople singer-guitarist Doug Martsch (aka Built To Spill) brings the lush pop-rock of the Beatles and Beach Boys kicking and screaming into the Sonic Youth era. Built To Spill marries the timeless and the modern so naturally that even brilliant, like-minded contemporaries like Guided By Voices and the Flaming Lips seem calculated. None of these songs crosses the dreaded four-minute mark. Maximum heavy-pop pleasure is squeezed into concise verse-chorus-verse-guitar-crunch nuggets. Together, they form a low-fidelity symphony that uplifts the spirit with every string-enhanced hook.
Everything about the album has the glow of wide-eyed innocence, ...
| | Quasi Featuring "Birds" CD (1998)
R&B Transmogrification music CDs
$10.79 A duo of Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss (who also drums in the acclaimed Olympia punk band Sleater-Kinney), Quasi is one of the most unique bands in the late 90's indie scene. Most of their songs find Coomes on keyboards and lead vocals and Weiss behind the drums, although both take turns on guitar. Their songs belong to the winsome pop tradition epitomized by Badfinger, yet most of them don't have choruses and are generally over in two minutes. Even the title mocks the notion of hit songs--"Birds" is just a short track of birds whistling.
What's perhaps most striking about FEATURING "BIRDS" ...

| | Spandau Ballet Collection CD (1999)
R&B Transmogrification music CDs
$10.15 Dutch reissue label Disky has produced one of those head-scratching compilations in its Spandau Ballet album The Collection. Fourteen tracks making up almost an hour of music run the gamut from major British hits like "To Cut a Long Story Short" and "Lifeline" to live versions of "Gold" and "Foundation" and remixes of "Coffee Club" and "Highly Strung" (retitled "Highly Re-strung"). But there is no discernible selection criterion to this group of tracks drawn from the band's 1980-1984 recordings for Chrysalis Records. It's not really a hits collection, since it leaves so many hits out (and potential American purchasers should be warned that none of Spandau Ballet's U.S. chart entries, not even "True," are included). It's not a rarities collection. If there is any organizing principle, it seems to be danceability, since, at least until near the end, all of the tracks maintain a steady beat. But this is a seemingly random collection of Spandau Ballet performances, including various singles, LP tracks, live recordings, and remixes in no particular order. Some of the band's better material is here, some isn't. But anyone buying this album expecting a best-of or greatest-hits disc (as the title The Collection would seem to imply) is going to be disappointed. ~ William Ruhlmann
The freeze-dried funk put forth by bands like Spandau Ballet is one of the most distinct musical genres that did not survive the '80s. Many bands in England used this mishmash of new wave instruments playing soulful music to contrast ...
