Duster is made up of two members, C. Amber and E. Parton, with occasional help from their friends on drums and recording duties. Stratosphere is mainly recorded at their home on four track. At times, they sound like Pavement and other times like Seely with higher pitched male vocals. Stratosphere demonstrates their guitar-based focus, riding on the flow of duel picking guitar melodies. With many guitars switching dynamic roles and riding on tunings, Duster sounds a bit like early Sonic Youth. Bass and drums act as the bottom, while guitars playfully find their melody by feeding off one another, throwing notes back and forth. The four-track recording element brings a wonderful space warmth or humidity to Stratosphere, which keeps you flying in the air or floating in space. A hard task with a four-track recording is the recording of the vocals. For atmospheric affect, it works. The voice provides texture to the plucking guitars, but no lyrics are understood. They act as instruments. Along with guitars and vocals, many great manipulations with tape noise as background effects exist on Stratosphere. "Echo Bravo" is definitely the highlight of the record. A long build of noise and whiny guitars rev up the track with a steady drum machine beat creating stress and tension. When is it going to give? Then, it finally busts. Distorted guitars in a heavy breakdown find their cues. Vocals appear 2:45 seconds in to deliver a depressing calming element in the lazy delivery. The record may be a bit long for some listeners, clocking in at 53 minutes. Stratosphere is best listened to at different times; tracks may be isolated or the record can be divided in parts. Duster are at their finest when they play with dynamics. Many tunes have a loud and a soft part, but they are never predictable. The transition is always interesting or takes you by surprise. ~ David SerraMagnet (p.80) - "[A] sound akin to Yo La Tengo playing beneath a heavy winter blanket. For an exploration of the pop side of the space-rock moon, STRATOSPHERE is one place to start." Option (5-6/98, p.85) - "...an enticing blend of guileless, lo-fi pop and some over-the-top, volume-fetish psychedelic rock..." Duster Stratosphere Songs Stratosphere Review

Stratosphere album
$12.05 Hot on the heels of their most successful album, Rush's 1981 tour was documented and released as EXIT, itself a Top 10 record. The package is an essential purchase for Rush diehards as well as hard rock fans. It makes a fine companion to ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE, as there are no repeated tracks. The two live records combine to make a fine representation of Rush's prime era.
"YYZ" from MOVING PICTURES features Neil Peart's drum solo and shows why he is truly one of rock's premier skin bashers. Fan favorite "Closer to the Heart" gets the crowd participation going while the epic "Jacob's Ladder" is made to be played in an arena setting. "Xanadu" and album closer "La Villa Strangiato" are both mammoth tracks that exceed the studio versions due to the excellent interplay of the band and their growth as musicians. Recorded in the U.K. and Canada, EXIT is a phenomenal live recording that shows the band can interpret their studio material with both feeling and expertise.
Rush was planning on releasing a live album after the Permanent Waves tour, but manager Cliff Burnstein convinced the group that they were peaking musically and should go straight back into the recording studio -- resulting in their finest album, 1981's Moving Pictures. So after the tour wound down, their postponed live album was finally assembled, released as Exit...Stage Left the same year. The album turned out to be the polar opposite of its predecessor, 1976's raw and direct All the World's a Stage; in fact, ...
| | Godspeed You Black Emperor F# A# (Infinity) CD (1998)
Stratosphere CD music
$11.89 "We are trapped in the belly of this horrible machine, and the machine is bleeding to death." Few albums begin with such promise and foreboding, but this first full-length from Canadian genius collective Godspeed You Black Emperor! succeeds in the first few moments. F# A# (Infinity) contains three compositions that run the gamut from grotesque to sublime. The term "composition" seems an appropriate one to use as this band does not write songs. Each piece is at least 14 minutes in length, consisting of three to four sections. The band, a nine-member unit consisting of guitar, drums, bass, strings, keyboard, marimbas, and woodwinds, intersperses voice-over narrative with sprawling instrumental melodies. The arrangements move slowly, building from hushed silence to cathartic crescendo and back again. The narratives that accompany the music meditate on the corruption of the American government and the seeming emptiness of the postmodern era. At times, it seems that the music might offer hope, but alternatively, the haunting melodies can serve to emphasize the confusion encountered in these stories. As "Dead Flag Blues," the album's first track, unfolds, the speaker's voice is undercut by a poignant string melody and the piece builds to a beautiful peak. "Dead Flag Blues" is a four-part arrangement in an apparently symphonic pattern. A theme is stated, followed by a quiet interlude out of which the tension builds to disaster/epiphany ...
| | Low Secret Name CD (1999)
Stratosphere music CDs
$11.89 On Low's fifth album (the fourth was a European-only live album), the band moved away from the fuzzy sound of its previous few releases and re-introduced some of the brittleness of earlier records. Many of the tracks also feature auditory experimentation. Garbled announcements, scratchy backing tracks, an instrument called an opitgan, and strings all find a place here. As the band moved into more experimental territory, it fit better than ever onto the indie label Kranky's roster, alongside Magnog, Jessamine, and the like.
"Starfire" is the band's most rock & roll-sounding song, though its inspiration is more Galaxie 500 than Led Zeppelin. The shimmering "Missouri" plays on the pun of "Missouri/misery." The monumentally aggressive "Don't Understand" features the most brutal drumming to be found on a Low record. Meanwhile, songs ...

| | Fabulous Thad Jones CD (1958)
Stratosphere music CDs
$9.99 Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Jones is regarded as one of the most original trumpet players in hard bop. His unorthodox and daring improvisations are as complex as they are inventive, often containing odd intervals that aren't natural to the trumpet. On the debut THE FABULOUS THAD JONES, one can hear the burgeoning talents of the then-young Jones.
Jones' playing on this 1954 release is distinct and exciting. His compelling tone and technique instinctively evoke the dense and brassy tone of predecessors such as Fats Navarro. On the Porter classic "Get out of Town," Jones wastes no time. After a brief Harmon-muted introduction, he breaks into startlingly forceful phrases. Jones' blistering soloing ...

Stratosphere songs
$8.89 For a band that's known worldwide as the premier purveyors of goth-rock gloom and doom (though hardly incapable of sparkling pop gems), it's no small thing to identify a particular album as their darkest, most disturbing sonic statement. Nevertheless, PORNOGRAPHY surely fills the bill. Reportedly created during a time of great psychological upheaval for group leader Robert Smith, it's a gloriously no-holds-barred existential angst-fest, from the very first line, "It doesn't matter if we all die." Not since Leonard Cohen's SONGS OF LOVE AND HATE had despair been so lovingly ladled into album form, but it's not just Smith's Prozac prescription that was upped during these sessions. His lyrical ...
