When Three 6 Mafia released Mystic Stylez, the album that's widely seen as their full-length debut, it didn't make too many waves. After all, it was released independently in 1995, a time when indie rap labels struggled to break out of their local markets, and furthermore, the group was from Memphis of all places and their style was far from the mainstream -- very far. Yet years later, Mystic Stylez stands out as a definitive effort, defining not only what the collective would base its future empire upon but also the horrorcore style of hardcore rap that thrived among the underground scenes outside of New York during the era (e.g., Esham in Detroit, Brotha Lynch Hung in Sacramento, etc.). It's one of those albums that came and went during its initial release yet became a cult classic years later. Mystic Stylez became so for several reasons, among them the album's overall eerie tone, producers Juicy J and DJ Paul's Dirty South-defining lo-fi beats, and the group's downright confrontational rhetoric. Throughout the album, Three 6 Mafia embraces one taboo after another, often many at once, mainly violence ("Tear da Club Up"), drugs ("Now I'm Hi, Pt. 3"), sex ("Porno Movie"), and occultism ("Mystic Stylez"). All of this would be sheer exploitation for the sake of exploitation if not for the craft, especially in terms of production. And if you want evidence that there's more to Mystic Stylez than shock value, listen to "Da Summa," a calm moment of respite amid the thundering chaos that very well could be seen as the Memphis underground version of "It Was a Good Day" or the countless other laid-back summertime anthems of the mid-'90s. For the most part though, Three 6 Mafia is hell-bent here, literally, and that in itself was novelty enough for its time. Years later, in the wake of the successive Dirty South explosion, you can trace back the influence of Mystic Stylez, as a myriad heedless Southerners began throwing 'bows, blazing hydro, and embracing taboos left and right. In fact, even latter-day Three 6 Mafia became a replica of itself, as they continually strived to retain the underground essence of their own beginning. [Several reissues over the years have jumbled the original track listing a bit (adding EP tracks like "Live by Yo Rep," for instance) and altered the cover art, so it's worth shopping around. In particular, the 2001 Hypnotize Minds reissue features remastered sound and is recommended.] ~ Jason Birchmeier

Too Evil Man this album is three 6 mafias rawest and their evilest this is were it began for their career the beats are dark and evil and so is the rapping this might be their best work they should of waited and got some better stuff to record it on it was released back in 95 recorded in 94. This album is harder than any other CD they have put out and its not for the faint of heart it might just be to much for the hardest gangsta rap listener. Its like they really worshiped the devil on this album. Submitted by realtalkoftop (gadsden, al, usa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
My favorite cd One of the greatest albums ever made! Straight raw and uncut beats and lyrics you'll ever hear. This is their first cd which came out in the spring of 1995. It features DJ Paul, Juicy J, Lord Infamous, Gangsta Boo, Crunchy Black, Koopsta Knicca, Kingpin Skinny Pimp, Playa Fly, MC Mack, and La' Chat. Hits include "Da Summa", "Back Against Da Wall", "Tear Da Club Up" and the Bone Thugs diss "Live By Yo Rep". This is Three 6 Mafia at their best.

Mystic Stylez
$10.39 Hailing from Memphis, Three 6 Mafia came up in the southern underground scene, garnering a rabid following as their renown approached nationwide status. CHAPTER 2: WORLD DOMINATION is a bold, ambitious declaration; the title speaks for itself and goes a long way towards explaining what the Three 6 has in store for the unsuspecting public.
Though the emphasis is obviously on the group's mesmerizing vocal acrobatics, this is nonetheless a very musical album, filled with rich, snaky bass lines, synth pads, and creative vocal arrangements galore. Comparisons to the tongue-twisting styles of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony are inevitable (though Three 6 Mafia claims to be the originator), ...

Mystic Stylez
$14.09 Da End furthers the horrorcore style that Three 6 Mafia had unveiled on their cult favorite Mystic Stylez debut, except here the overall tone is one of outright violence rather than eerie ominousness. Moreover, the sound quality here is much improved, as producers Juicy J and DJ Paul lay down the sort of hard-hitting, bottom-heavy beats that would define not only the remainder of ...

Mystic Stylez
$9.99 Like many Rhino compilations, this is geared more to the novice or the casual fan than the aficionado, but that's not a criticism. If someone wants a basic primer of the bluegrass sound past and present that manages to be accessible and avoid unduly clichéd track selection, this 18-song compilation fits the bill well. Most of the biggest names are here (Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, the Dillards, the Stanley Brothers, the Kentucky Colonels, J.D. Crowe, Ricky Skaggs, Alison Krauss), as are some of the genre's top standards ("Blue Moon of Kentucky," "Orange Blossom Special," "Uncle Pen," "Foggy Mountain Breakdown"). The inclusion of Flatt & Scruggs' "The Ballad of Jed Clampett," Eric Weissberg and Steve Mandell's "Dueling Banjos," and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" may rankle purists, but it clears the path to listeners who are only familiar with the idiom through these songs, and may find a lot more that they'll like on the less overexposed performances on this anthology. ~ Richie Unterberger

Mystic Stylez
$13.89 This music was designed to stimulate and harmonize with specific brain wave frequencies. It can be used for this or simply enjoyed as beautiful space music.I used to work at a place named Sirius Minds, which was a Brain Gym. The concept was a gymnasium for the brain, where there were various stations utilizing light and sound technology to help people relax. In the heart of Manhattan, this was a peaceful oasis. My favorite thing to do there was relaxation/meditation sessions in the "waterfall dream chair." This was a special chair designed to promote relaxation, with an actual waterfall inside. Being a music lover, I would usually play something soft, innocuous, or dreamy in the background: there is no shortage of that kind of music to choose from. The problem with finding some good new age music to relax with and use for actual meditation or deep relaxation is that the songs are not really tailored to match the meditative experience. They provide a gentle, soft background, but the shifting songs create a variety of tempos and tonalities. The more changing rhythms and new harmonies introduced the more potential interruptions in your concentration and path to reaching deeper relaxation. The music doesn't match your experience as the body becomes more and more relaxed. Your brain waves provide different experiences at different frequencies. Light and sound technology allows a novice meditator access to a choice of brain frequency destinations. The frequency ranges we worked with are: Alpha, ...
