"I'll never be a rock and roll star," Reel Big Fish's Aaron Barrett sweetly sings out in frustration at his band's inability to reach pin-up proportions on "I'll Never Be." Ah, but that song was written long before the group decided to "Sell Out," and promptly garner the attention Barrett so craved. Their timing was impeccable, for ska was then terminally "Trendy," and the Big Fish were ready to be reeled into the big time. So Turn the Radio Off, because their songs sound better coming out of the stereo minus the annoying DJ and ads that interrupt the party. This is the band's first album for Mojo, but some fans will already be familiar with many of the songs within, as nearly half the set features tracks from their self- released debut Everything Sucks. However, they've all been fabulously re-cut (as newcomers would discover for themselves once Mojo reissued Sucks in 2000). The group's lineup underwent numerous changes in between the two recordings, but Fish's sarky and snarky attitude remained the same, as such new songs as "Sell Out" and the hilarious "She Has a Girlfriend Now" well prove. That latter number boasts Save Ferris' Monique Powell on vocals, and she's just one of a bevy of guest stars found within. "Girlfriend" is ska at its most irresistible, and equally good are the re-recorded "Trendy," "Beer" and "Join the Club," alongside a slew of new numbers including the instrumental "241," the brass meets ska-core "All I Want Is More," and the storming "Nothin'." The Fish are now swimming in a much bigger pond, but they've grown to shark-like proportions along the way, and this sleek set of infectious songs, flashy arrangements, finely honed playing, and huge sound courtesy of the excellent production, is proof positive that the Fish are minnows no longer. ~ Jo-Ann Greene
Band's BioOne of the brightest moments in Reel Big Fish's lengthy career occurred roughly a decade ago, when the ska-punk band inked its major label deal (at the time, with Universal/Mojo) and subsequently released its second and most successful album, Turn The Radio Off. The second important milestone in Reel Big Fish's career came nearly a decade later, in early 2006, when the act learned that they were finally dropped from the label's roster (which had now morphed into Jive Records) after years of begging to be cut loose. Now, while most bands would've viewed such action as severe impediment in furthering one's musical career, Reel Big Fish simply celebrated the fact that ...

Homeward Bound CD music
$16.45 ELLEN DEMOSVOCALISTEllen Demos was born and raised in Boston Massachusettes. She began to sing at an early age and her early education included formal training in voice and classical piano. She made a leap from her classical studies, finding she didn't really have the temperament for the classics, to a mixture of blues and jazz which in her early twenties led to informal jamming and performing with various jazz and ethnic ensembles in the Cambridge, Massachusettes area. This included exposure to Indian music both classical and fusion and African drumming and dance. She later became interested in Brazilian music and worked in the New England area fusing jazz and Brazilian influences. She was also involved in improvisational theater at this time. Ellen moved to Los Angeles in 1979 and continued her studies in vocal technique and composition and arranging. During this time she was also active in the recording industry doing commercial work and private projects. She also performed with big bands and small ensembles and formed the Brazilian/Jazz band, Pastoria, with saxophonist Mike McMullen. It was via this liason that Ellen made the move to Europe. Since then Ellen has appeared in concert in Belgium, Germany, France, Portugal, Denmark, Hungary, Ireland and England. She has done work for radio and television. In Denmark she has worked as a soloist for the Danish Light Music Orchestra. In Ireland she has appeared with her own Jazz ensembles on both radio and television and has been a featured soloist with the Irish radio (RTE) Orchestra. Ellen has also been featured at both the Cork and Dublin International Jazz Festivals and the Bray Jazz festival. She has toured Portugal, France, Germany, England and Ireland with her own ensembles. On the educational scene, Ellen has participated in workshops at local clubs and Jazz festivals. She also teaches privately.
