Keys To The Heart
$14.19 "Dear Old Stockholm" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo.
Many elder statesmen of jazz are afforded respect simply because of their name and what they've done in the past. Not so for pianist Tommy Flanagan. While it would hardly be an exaggeration to call him a living legend, incredibly, Flanagan's technique seems to only improve with age. In fact, for SEA CHANGES, Flanagan returns to much of the repertoire he recorded ...

| | Ronald Shannon Jackson Beast In The Spider Bush: Live At The Caravan Of Dreams CD (2000)
Keys To The Heart
$14.65 Ronald Shannon Jackson & The Decoding Society: Ronald Shannon Jackson (drums); Eric Person (soprano & alto saxophones); Akbar Ali (violin, barriphone); Cary DeNigris (guitar); Reginal Washington (bass).
Recorded live at the Caravan Of Dreams, Fort Worth, Texas in 1985. Includes liner notes by Ronald Shannon Jackson.
From an ongoing series of reissues of live recordings by Ronald Shannon Jackson & the Decoding Society comes this curiosity piece. This is a meeting of the second generation Decoding Society (Vernon Reid, Zane Massey, and Melvin Gibbs had all departed), with African singers and drummers Twins Seven Seven. Therefore, it's also the first and only Decoding Society recording with vocals. It hardly matters. While the band is still pretty tight -- with Reggie Washington on bass, Eric Person on saxophones, Cary DeNigris on guitar, and Akbar Ali on violin -- and the performance is good, it loses its some of its fire as a result of the collaboration, which was not well-rehearsed. This is some scheme on the part of Jackson to move the Decoding Society's sound into ...

Keys To The Heart
$15.19 SULTANS OF STRING - YALLA YALLA! CD RELEASE!TRINITY ST. PAUL'S CENTRE, FRIDAY, MAY 29, 8:00PM presented by SMALL WORLD MUSIC Toronto, ON - On Friday, May 29 at Trinity St. Paul's Centre, Canadian string super-group Sultans of String release their stunning new CD, "Yalla Yalla". This sophomore album weaves a truly global sonic tapestry, influenced by Spanish Flamenco, Arabic folk, Cuban rhythms, jazz, classical and French Manouche Gypsy-jazz music! From the driving and spirited title track (Arabic for “Come on! Let’s go!”), to the soaring musical tributes of Sable Island, Auyuittuq Sunrise, Gardens of Lebanon, to the sweet yearning of Le Bisou (The Kiss), Yalla Yalla is a riveting musical adventure, seamlessly traversing diverse themes of heart, place and tradition. Fiery violin dances with kinetic guitar while a funk bass lays down unstoppable grooves. A full Cuban trumpet ensemble gets in on the fun, offering up an exhilarating and new texture to the band. Throughout, acoustic strings meet electronic wizardry to create layers and depth of sound.“Canada is a real meeting places of styles and musical influences from around the world” says bandleader and 2009 JUNO Award nominee Chris McKhool. “At the same time, as a band we try to tell uniquely Canadian stories, putting forth our vision of the world as one family.” Chris’ paternal Makhoul grandparents immigrated to Canada from Lebanon in the early 1900s, and his Egyptian-born mother, an ...
