Composer: Jeff Lynne. Personnel: Jeff Lynne (vocals, guitar, keyboards, synthesizer); Richard Tandy (vocals, keyboards, synthesizer); Bev Bevan (vocals, drums); Kelly Groucutt (vocals, percussion). Recording information: 1973-1977. Photographer: Fin Costello. By ignoring the band's first two albums, the Roy Wood-dominated Electric Light Orchestra and the transitional ELO II, the 1979 singles compilation ELO's Greatest Hits presents a somewhat skewed vision of the band. Ironically, this revision has become the normative view of the band: slick, almost mechanical purveyors of undeniably catchy but somewhat soulless hit singles. "Evil Woman," "Showdown," "Turn to Stone," "Telephone Line," "Strange Magic" -- anyone who was anywhere near a radio in the latter half of the '70s knows them all by heart, whether they like them or not. But ELO's Greatest Hits does a far graver disservice to the Electric Light Orchestra's oeuvre. For some reason, the original vinyl LP sounded somewhat muffled and distant, as if the EQ was perceptibly off. The CD was apparently mastered from the same poor-quality tapes. The result is while this is otherwise a fine survey of Jeff Lynne's most successful -- if not necessarily his best -- songs, it just doesn't sound very good. The ELO catalog has since been carefully remastered, and sounds worlds better. The two-disc Strange Magic and three-disc Flashback compilations trump ELO's Greatest Hits in both sound quality and historical accuracy. ~ Stewart Mason Most of ELO's biggest and best hits -- "Evil Woman," "Rockaria," "Telephone Line" -- are included on this solid but slightly skimpy collection. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Although ELO's mid-'70s string of albums--ON THE THIRD DAY, ELDORADO, FACE THE MUSIC, A NEW WORLD RECORD, and OUT OF THE BLUE--are substantial efforts, filled with exciting, inventive music, ELO was known at the time and forever after as a world-class singles band. ELO'S GREATEST HITS 1973-1977, originally released in 1979, showcases this era magnificently. All 11 of these tracks were released as singles, some of them slightly remixed and edited from their album versions, and most of them were both AM and FM radio hits. Beatlesque and catchy enough to appeal to teenyboppers, yet ambitious and sonically detailed enough for album-rock snobs, ELO was one of the most commercially successful rock bands of the decade, and for good reason. Although the set lacks anything from the band's more experimental first two albums (not even the magnificent "10538 Overture"), this collection is '70s-vintage ear candy at its finest. ELO: Genius on CD. A must have! 5 STARS This CD is an example of just how good Classic Rock from 1970’s is/was. Classic meaning great music, not necessarily old. Listening to “Evil Woman” the first track on Electric Light Orchestra: Greatest Hits 1973-1977, it’s apparent that front man Jeff Lynne is a very, very talented composer. He knows how to combine momentary subtleties with long passages of flat rocking out.
Jeff Lynne, the creative genius of ELO, is a British born, classically trained musician who recorded his songs in studios all over Europe, and occasionally in LA during the 1970’s.
Due to his talent he's record with the biggest names in rock including Geroge Harrison of the Beatles (RIP), Bob Dylan and Tom Petty, aka The Travelling Wilburys. Jeff was a one-man 1970’s rock hit machine. His singles were staples of FM rock & pop radio of the 1970’s getting constant airplay.
Quality wise this is a well made CD. The transfer from album was done well. The sonic depth and clarity of each song on this CD is excellent.
There is a lot going on in each of Jeff’s Lynne’s songs. He obviously has an expertise in songwriting far beyond most composers. There’s really no reason to run on at length here since every song is outstanding and was an FM radio hit in it’s day selling millions of records. My suggestion is buy this CD, then make sure you get ELO's Out of the Blue CD. After that pick and choose among ELO’s extensive catalog. Note that Jeff's work with The Travelling Wilbury's is a little light in the rock dept considering his rock-n roll potential.

Greatest Hits 1973-1977
$9.29 This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Kelly Osbourne (vocals); Alephonsine DeChambure (spoken vocals); Linda Perry (various instruments, programming); Marc Jameson (drum programming). Kelly Osbourne's debut, Shut Up -- later retitled Changes upon its 2003 reissue -- arrived in 2002 in the thick of punk-pop's popularity in the early 2000s and it reflected the sound of the times. Three years later, Osbourne returned with her follow-up, Sleeping in the Nothing, and it sounded nothing like Shut Up/Changes, but like that debut, it reflected its times: it spurned punk revival for new wave revival. So, as the pop culture of the new millennium lives a quarter century in the past, Osbourne rides the wave, drafting L.A.'s favorite collaborator of the last five years, Ms. Linda Perry -- who struck it big with Pink, Xtina Aguilera, and Gwen Stefani, not so big with Courtney Love, Lisa Marie Presley, and Fischerspooner -- as writer, ...
