One of the great new wave/early MTV records, She's So Unusual is a giddy mix of self-confidence, effervescent popcraft, unabashed sentimentality, subversiveness, and clever humor. In short, it's a multifaceted portrait of a multifaceted talent, an artist that's far more clever than her thin, deliberately girly voice would indicate. Then again, Lauper's voice suits her musical persona, since its chirpiness adds depth, or reconfigures the songs, whether it's the call to arms of "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" or the tearjerking "Time After Time." Lauper is at her very best on the first side, all of which were singles or received airplay, and this collection of songs -- "Money Changes Everything," "Girls," "When You Were Mine," "Time," "She Bop," "All Through the Night" -- is astonishing in its consistency, so strong that it makes the remaining tracks -- all enjoyable, but rather pedestrian -- charming by their association with songs so brilliantly alive. If Lauper couldn't maintain this level of consistency, it's because this captured her persona better than anyone could imagine -- when a debut captures a personality so well, let alone a personality so tied to its time, the successive work can't help but pale in comparison. Still, when it's captured as brightly and brilliantly as it is here, it does result in a debut that retains its potency, long after its production seems a little dated. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Once the orange-haired Lauper dropped the contrived, dumb, cutesy, lispy broad persona, Cyndi Lauper was seen as a credible artist, and has subsequently become highly respected as a terrific songwriter. On this, her pen was sharpened with the magnificent song of unconditional love, "Time After Time," a track that has since been recorded by others, including beautiful cover versions by Miles Davis and the jazz husband-and-wife duo, Tuck And Patti. Less sophisticated, but of equal fun, is "She Bop," and then there are well-chosen covers such as Jules Shear's "All Through The Night" and Prince's "When You Were Mine." Cyndi Lauper She's So Unusual Songs She's So Unusual Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews A remastered cd missing a important track I love this album more than True Colors and own the original releases on cd but when I saw that this album is reissued and remastered I thought "Great!, The B-Side to Girls Just Wanna Have Fun will be finally included as a bonus track!".
Boy was I wrong! I was disapointed that Right Track Wrong Train wasn't on the remastered cd and further more was never released on the album in the first placed and should have been.
I could do without He's so unusual and Right Track Wrong Train would be in it's place and the last song on side A would be She-Bop (why the different version on the lp than the single release that we all are used too isn't on the album, I don't know?) and the album would be a masterpiece to me! People forget the B-Sides that could have been part of the albums in the first place and forgotten again when a remastered cd comes out and there are bonus tracks, but not those good B-Sides.
For example take alook at the George Harrison's album Cloud 9. The B-Side to Got My Mind Set On You is Lay His Head. The song is not part of the album in the first place and then not part of the remastered cd too. What a disapointment and a crock of poop! What is with these record labels? Girls (and guys) still just wanna have fun! Cyndi Lauper became an instant sensation with "Girls Just Want To Have Fun," which was the world's first introduction to the quirky, orange-haired diva in the bargain-store dress. Three other songs from her debut album, "She's So Unusual," landed in the top five ("She Bop," "All Through The Night," and "Time After Time" which made it all the way to #1). But this album is much more than just the hits. Cyndi covers a Prince song ("When U Were Mine") and honestly does it better than the Purple One could have done it himself. "I'll Kiss You" and "Yeah Yeah" are perfect party tunes, and the ska-flavored "Witness" is reminiscent of early Police or the English Beat. The quirkiest moment of all is "He's So Unusual," the 45-second introduction to "Yeah Yeah" and a 1929 novelty tune which Cyndi sings Betty Boop-style. After almost an album's worth of new-wave synth-rockers and a few ballads, it's jarring, and it totally works. Of course, all this wouldn't mean much if Cyndi didn't have that powerful voice, able to convey so many emotions, from the shrieks and hiccups that became her trademark to her almost tear-stained delivery on "Time After Time" (which was accompanied by a heartrending video). This album is a must for any fan of '80s music, especially of the new wave/synth-pop variety, and is a good album for those new to the music of this amazing woman. Long live Cyndi! absolutely great this cd is absolutely one of the greatest of our time. She gives us music to dance to and music to cry to. This album was her first and it was her best. I love all her albums, but this one stays in my car at all times. She's great on cd and equally as great in concert. If you haven't seen her...u need to.
