Incubus: Brandon Boyd, Mike Einziger, Jose Pasillas II, DJ Kilmore, Dirk Lance. Additional personnel: Dave Holdridge (cello); Cut Chemist. Nu-Mark (scratches). Personnel: Brandon Boyd (vocals); Mike Einziger (guitar); Jose Antonio Pasillas II (drums); Cut Chemist (scratches). Audio Mixers: Rick "Soldier" Will; Scott Litt. Recording information: NRG Recording Services. Unknown Contributor Role: DJ Lyfe. Produced by Scott Litt, Incubus' second full-length album, Make Yourself, makes a bid for broader mainstream success while keeping the group rooted in a hybrid of familiar late '90s alt-metal (i.e., roaring guitars, white-noise sonic textures, and an undercurrent of electronics) and Chili Pepper funk-rock. Where S.C.I.E.N.C.E. sometimes veered abruptly between the two genres without really fusing them, Make Yourself finds the band settling more comfortably into its sound, and once again, there are a few really good singles. Once again, too, there are still a few awkward moments and underwritten songs, but overall, the album should definitely please fans. ~ Steve Huey Take the apocalyptic, electronics-tinged riff-rock of bands like Korn. Subtract the fratboy sensibility and the Red Hot Chili Peppers-derived hip-hop rhythms. Add a sophisticated sense of melody and harmony, a more optimistic lyrical outlook, and a sense of dynamics. You've essentially got the Incubus sound. Incubus practices the kind of rapid intra-song mood shifts that were Nirvana's trademark, but instead of merely going from soft to loud and back, they change stylistically, switching from full-on hard rock to almost jangly, low-key alt-rock. The resultant sound should appeal to fans of both styles. The tasteful application of electronic effects updates the feel of MAKE YOURSELF nicely. There's plenty of teeth-gnashing and shrieking angst to be found in the lyrics, but there's hopefulness and pop-friendly catchiness as well. In the world of late-'90s radio rock, Incubus seems capable of being all things to all people.

Alternative Press (1/00, p.88) - 3 out of 5 - "...a stylish attempt to merge...metal-edged riff-rock with hip-hop turntable aesthetics....reveals a band with more [brains] than...balls...." CMJ (11/1/99, p.26) - "...a fresh and sassy new amalgam....[Incubus] still rock the night away, but they've mellowed out considerably on the smooth-movin' MAKE YOURSELF." The Essential Incubus If you are new to the world of Incubus music, pick up this album. This is by far their best album with Morning View right behind it. You WILL NOT be disappointed in it; every song is one you can listen to over and over Submitted by dfx866 (Marathon, WI) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Great effort I've always held Incubus in high esteem for there ability to try new things and be good at it... its no different hear. The lyrics, the music and vocals are all superior. They somehow mesh loads of genres into the songs make it sound outstanding. "Privilege", "Stellar", "Drive", and "Pardon Me" are the top five best songs on this album. Great music. | | Sylvain Sylvain Sleep Baby Doll... CD (1998)
Make Yourself
$17.09 Sylvain Sylvain is a true originator. As guitarist and songwriter for the legendary New York Dolls, Sylvain helped influenced a generation of punk and glam rockers. After the demise of the New York Dolls, Sylvain went onto a solo career. On his own, Sylvain continues the tradition he started in the Dolls. SLEEP BABY DOLL is a great transition record, taking the best from his past and bridging the musical gap to the future.
Personnel: Sylvain Sylvain (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, harmonica, accordion, handclaps); Frankie Infante (guitar, handclaps); Casey Dolan, Michael Lockwood, Bob Andrews, Olivier LeBaron (guitar); Mike Wilcox (slide guitar); Joel Berliner (harmonica); Andy Sheppard (saxophone); Ricky Corvette Mizrahi (horns); Paul Wallfisch (piano, organ); Jean Francois Sylvain (piano); John Carlucci (bass, handclaps); Brian Keats (drums, tamborine, castanets, handclaps, percussion); Jennifer Woods (snare drum); Dave Bassett, Rudi Protrudi (background vocals). Engineers: Dave Bassett, Mike Wolf, Mike Wolf. Recorded at Chateau Relaxeau, Los Angeles, California; Trash Studios, Marietta, Georgia; Greenhouse, London, England. Personnel: Oliver LeBaron, Frank Infante, Bob "Derwood" Andrews, Michael Lockwood, Casey Dolan (guitar); Mike Wilcox (slide guitar); Andy Sheppard (saxophone); Brian Keats (drums); Rudi Protrudi (background vocals). Recording information: Chateau Relaxeau, Los Angeles, CA; Greenhouse, London, England; Trash Recording Studio, Marietta, GA. Photographer: Dawn Laureen. Longtime fans of the New York Dolls realized that the band was more than just a vehicle for the Jagger/Richards, Steve Tyler/Joe Perry combo of David Johansen and Johnny Thunders. If they were the heart of that group, then Sylvain Sylvain was and is the soul. (Sleep) Baby Doll is an extraordinary work, and is as good if not better than the first two albums by the Dolls. It is certainly the most logical extension of that work from any solo Doll. "Paper, Pencil & Glue" opens the disc like a tornado, the way the Rolling ...
| | Runaways Live In Japan CD (1977) (Import) United Kingdom
Make Yourself
$15.59 "Perhaps the very best from an era of classic rock live albums. Includes essential tracks `I Wonder Where The Boys Are' and `All Right You Guys', not on the studio LPs" Robert Coyne, Rock, The Rough Guide. Originally not released in the UK or US, Live In Japan was recorded in 1977 during the girls sold out arena tour! The Runaways had become genuine superstars in Japan and this album boasts superior sound quality (by '70s standards) and explosive, uninhibited versions of "You Drive Me Wild," "Cherry Bomb," "California Paradise," and other hard rock pearls. With the line up still the same, just before Jackie and then Cherrie were to leave the band the girls were on top form, making this one of the best live rock albums of the 1970s! Except for a handful of bootlegs, Live in ...
| | Beans Only CD (2006)
Make Yourself
$14.65 Beans: Hamid Drake, William Parker . Recording information: Leon Dorsey Studios, NY, NY. Maverick producer/MC Beans piloted the underground hip-hop crew Antipop Consortium to new outré heights before beginning a solo career in 2003. Beans has built his name on transgressing boundaries and using hip-hop as a palette with which to mix other genres, electronic and jazz among them, and ONLY finds the artist continuing this trend. With help from two of avant-garde jazz's most formidable figures--bassist William Parker and drummer Hamid Drake--Beans offers up an evocative electronic landscape that mixes jazz, funk, ambient, and experimental hip-hop into a brainy, nocturnal fantasia. Beans's tracks are relatively minimal, giving Parker and Drake plenty of room to improvise and add color, and the artist also takes up the mic here and there to add his dense, jagged flow and dazzlingly clever wordplay to the mix. Always one to push things to the limit, out-there rapper/producer Beans hands some beats over to avant-jazzers William Parker and Hamid Drake for one of the most sparse and narrow releases in Thirsty Ear's genre-smashing Blue Series. Only is a skeletal, midnight album, and while it's narrow enough to be considered a mood piece that won't always suit the listener, it's Beans' bold choice to keep things lean. ...
