Personnel: Joe Satriani (guitar, keyboards, programming); Eric Caudieux (keyboards, bass, programming); Pat Thrall (bass); Anton Fig (drums). "Until We Say Goodbye" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. With Crystal Planet, Joe Satriani made an effective return to his signature sound following the erratic blues-rock detour of Joe Satriani. For the follow-up to Crystal Planet, Satriani is once again exploring novel territory in an effort to keep his music fresh, and Engines of Creation is the biggest stylistic shift he's made yet -- to electronic music. Satriani's guitar is still the focal point of the music, to be sure, but while his virtuosity is obvious, it's often submerged in the new demands of this musical idiom. That isn't a surprise either, given that Satriani is one of the few guitar shredders whose taste and musicality have never been in question. But fans who simply want to hear him rip through his typical jaw-dropping solos may be disappointed (even though, in the end, there are more than a few solos), as will those guitar fans who reflexively disdain all sounds electronic. Having defended it, though, Engines of Creation isn't a total success. While the music is certainly influenced by techno and electronica, it probably won't appeal to listeners coming from those arenas; overall, it simply isn't as adventurous as much genuine electronica, avoiding complex backing rhythms or edgy sonic textures; nor is it as hypnotic, meandering or drifting aimlessly at times instead of moving into trancelike states of consciousness. Plus, Satriani's songs are often more traditional than they may seem upon first listen; many of the compositions are based on repeated themes and riffs and standard rock-song structures, switching between recurring, identifiable sections rather than gradually building and unfolding. However, the album can also be quite inventive. Satriani has challenged himself to find ways of coaxing totally new sounds from his guitar, and he weaves them seamlessly into the futuristic electronic soundscapes. Moreover, his melodies and main themes have rarely been this angular and off-kilter, meaning that exploring this music has indeed helped Satriani refresh and re-imagine his signature sound. Even the pieces that aren't ultimately that revolutionary are still intriguing, since very few musicians have the technical training and innate sense of musicality required to mine this territory. Overall, Engines of Creation is a brave and sporadically successful experiment, and it's also a promising new direction for Satriani should he choose to continue this vein of exploration and take it out even farther. ~ Steve Huey Master shredder and guitar instructor to some of rock's biggest names, Joe Satriani could surely rest on his laurels. His instrumental virtuosity has already placed him in the hallowed halls of music, yet he continues to release fresh, inventive material. Combining guitar showmanship and electronica, his most ambitious release yet, ENGINES OF CREATION expands his repertoire even more. "Devil's Slide," with its furious machine gun riffs and time changes, shows that Satriani won't be making a New Age album anytime soon. "Flavor Crystal 7" proves that while he's no Moby, he can deliver some catchy breaks and beats of his own. On the trippy "Borg Sex," he demonstrates the heavy guitar effects that have made him famous, while "Until We Say Goodbye" is a return to the mellower melodic phrasing of his earlier works. "Attack" is a Crystal Method-inspired ambient piece, and "Champagne" features blues licks over an electronic backbeat. On ENGINES, Joe Satriani has harnessed the availability of modern technology and merged it with his unique guitar talent. The man who started an entire movement in the late '80s seems poised to reinvent rock in the new millennium.

Q (5/00, p.118) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...The work of a truly gifted musician....sweeping and strongly identifiable melodies glide over the less organic background..." Engines Of Creation Music Joe Satriani Engines Of Creation Songs Engines Of Creation Music Engines Of Creation Music Review Average Rating: (3.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews What's wrong with you people? I agree with ONE of the earlier reviews here...this is probably Joe's most underrated albums of all time. Sure, it's a little "techno" here and there, but overall, there are some incredible melodies here. I would give the album a "four" based on "Champagne?" and "Clouds Race Across the Sky" alone. But there are many other great tracks as well. Joe did branch out on this album and, unlike some of the aforementioned guitarists who tried and failed with this approach, he succeeded. Not a Satch Album! What happened here? No wonder Satch got so much flak. This is a poor attempt by him to be 'different'. Some people might claim it's a good contemporary album, mabye so... if you class techno beats and flashy sound effects as music! This sounds like a hardcore dance album at times. A few of the songs reveal some traditional Satch, these include 'Until We Say Goodbye', 'The Power Cosmic Part 1' and 'Clouds Race Across The Sky' however they are still below average when comparing them to his other peices of work. 'Engines of Creation' is his poorest album to date. Just dont get it, even if you are a fan. Submitted by David (Perth, Scotland) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Joeœ super experiment For the first listening it is the strange album for Joe, but after several listenings you realise it is unique album , and excelent one! Every track have itœ own story. The most listenable tracks "Until we say goodbye", "Cloud race across the sky" and "Slow and easy" are so good that you can easily push the >repeat< button on your player. Powerfull songs like "Flavor crystal 7" , "Attack", "The power cosmic 2000 pt.2" and "Engines of creation" can run your adrenalin high, and you will be cought by their power. Beautiful album by any standard. Submitted by Tomislav (Europe , Croatia, Zagreb) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
There are better than this... Maybe it's a Canada thing...but this album was very disappointing. It barely deserves 2 starts. By far (IMHO) his weekest record to date. Submitted by Matt (Vancouver, BC Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
excellence in disguise Satch certainly took a few blows for this experimental record but I think his songwriting is just as strong as on any other album. Just listen to Clouds Race Across the Sky or Until We Say Goodbye for evidence. Another interesting aspect of this recording is the strong theme that runs through the entire CD. His tone, songwriting and playing all fit together wonderfully. Although I haven't listened to it as much I feel the new Is There Love in Space? isn't as strong as Engines in terms of songwriting and theme. Engines Of Creation
$18.99 Guitarist Kelly J Randall (Still Human, The P.S.R. Project, Sweet Licks...) teams up with powerful youth evangelist/singer Cheryl Stanton and drummer J.D. Mann (The Mann Family Singers) to create a Christian Rock album that is a completely new voice in contemporary Christian Rock. It is both loud, celebratory and bombastic as it is soft and delicate and heartwrenching. And, at times, it is both. This is not the formulaic Christian "rock" that your mother cleans the house to. Engines Of Creation
$20.25 Who is Miss Gulch?Wrong -- she is not Auntie Mame's secretary (that was Agnes Gooch). She is, of course, the dog-snatching, bicycle-riding, spiteful spinster-next-door who had it in for Dorothy's little Toto. Of all Hollywood's ornery old maids, crotchety battle-axes, and crusty curmudgeons, Miss Gulch is the unquestioned queen; she is the ultimate Hollywood stereotype. Pity her! Born to higher things, why was she sentenced to serve forever as two-dimensional comic relief? And why should her formidable ...

Engines Of Creation
$16.45 Alex Colvin has been playing guitar and writing songs for over 40 years. Born in Manhattan, he grew up listening to old jazz records, especially Louis Armstrong and his Hot Seven and his Hot Five. He also enjoyed listening to his mom and aunts harmonize on old Tin Pan Alley standards and party songs. As a child, his family moved to San Francisco, and then to Montana. Rock and roll, surfing music, the British Rock Invasion, folk music, counterculture music of the sixties, blues, reggae, and country all influenced his music. In addition to over 80 of his original songs he plays over 200 covers from all of these genres. Among his favorites are Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Leonard Cohen, Louis Armstrong, the Eagles, John Lennon, Neil Young, Willie Nelson, Bob Marley….but there are really too many to name.In 1968, he left Montana to go to school in Seattle at University of Washington. This was a time when a lot was happening and also a time of great music. The weekend he arrived, Jesse Colin Young and the Youngbloods were playing the Love U Festival on University Boulevard. Alex and his friends loved going to concerts of Albert King, the Grateful ...
