Talented Washington-based drummer Nasar Abadey has built a solid reputation as a sideman with several groups, particularly those led by trumpeter Malachi Thompson. Mirage documents a collection of recordings from the 1990s from the drummer's band, Supernova, which in the early part of the decade featured the late tenor saxophonist Carter Jefferson. Not surprisingly, Jefferson provides some of the best playing on the album, with his contribution to the live, powerful version of John Coltrane's "Ascension" probably the highlight. Mirage is somewhat of a mixed bag, though, with a few convincing tracks combined with several weaker ones that are a bit of a throwback to the laid-back, fusion-laced, modal '70s. The closing "Chakra Cocktail" uses synthesizers for a spacy feel that creates some unusual sounds when mixed with Abadey's percussive effects: Star Wars greets the 21st century. Supernova includes some fine, lesser-known performers comfortable in a straight-ahead format. Guitarist Gerry Eastman, for example, consistently displays attractive chops as a linear bop-derived improviser, and bassist Joe King impresses with his solid soloing. Joe Ford's catchy composition, "Izit," has a sharp bite and memorable melody. While the band lacks some focus due to the diversity of styles, they maintain a consistently high level of professionalism and quality. ~ Steven Loewy

Cassandra Wilson continues to move down a highly eclectic path on Belly of the Sun, the somewhat belated follow-up to Traveling Miles. While displaying a jazz singer's mastery of melodic nuance and improvisatory phrasing, Wilson draws on a variety of non-jazz idioms -- roots music, rock, Delta blues, country, soul -- to create a kind of earthy, intelligent pop with obvious crossover appeal. Her core band includes guitarists Marvin Sewell and Kevin Breit, who blend marvelously, Sewell mostly on mellow acoustic and Breit adding atmospheric touches on electric, 12-string, and slide guitars, as well as mandolin, banjo, and even bouzouki. ...

This rare example of a Nat "King" Cole live recording captures one of the 20th century's greatest singers in fine voice in 1960 at the Sands, the Las Vegas headquarters of the Rat Pack. The band swings expertly through its sophisticated charts courtesy of legendary arrangers like Nelson Riddle and Dave Cavanaugh, and Cole demonstrates his command of a wide range of styles, from ballads like "I Wish You Love" and "Funny (Not Much)," to show tunes like "Thou Swell" and "Surrey With the Fringe on Top." A few bonus tracks are also featured, including a late-'50s studio recording of Duke Ellington's "In a Mellow Tone," and Cole's sniffy take on the then-still new rock & roll craze, "Mr. Cole Won't Rock & Roll."

The Fall's first post-Craig Scanlon album also introduced Julia Nagle, who took over keyboards from the departing Dave Bush and also contributed some guitar. Brix Smith and Karl Burns covered the rest of the guitar, and while Scanlon is missed, the end results work well enough. The crisp live edge to the recording is attractive, but oddly enough leaves a lot of space in the mix -- Mark E. Smith and Nagle's keyboards have pride of place along with Steven Hanley's bass guitar (give an ear to "Das Vulture Ans Ein Nutter-Wain" for an example). Smith himself seems to be searching for lyrics more than once, and while he comes up with a usual collection of acid-tongued zingers, other times he seems to be making vocal noise for the sake of it -- nothing wrong with that, but still, one expects more.
