With the group's 1980 debut, I JUST CAN'T STOP IT, the English Beat single-handedly defined the high-spirited ska revival sound that later gained immense popularity in the late '90s. I JUST CAN'T STOP IT was a massively influential album that has aged better than anything recorded by contemporaries like the Specials and the Selecter. Unlike the more traditional Jamaican-flavored ska sounds offered by those bands, the English Beat was not afraid to acknowledge its pop and punk influences.
I JUST CAN'T STOP IT features 14 songs that range from a moving, straight-faced rendition of pop crooner Andy Williams' "Can't Get Used to Losing You," to the punky original "Click Click," where a furious bassline and slashing electric guitars race each other to the track's end. On "Mirror in the Bathroom" and "Twist and Crawl," the English Beat fuses deep bass groves, dub percussion, and gritty rhythm guitars with singer Dave Wakeling's bright pop melodies to create a joyful, exuberant sound that has rarely been duplicated. Packed with tremendous performances like an upbeat ska rendition of Smokey Robinson's "Tears of a Clown" and the bouncy ska-pop of "Best Friend," I JUST CAN'T STOP IT is a flawless album that is impossible to resist.
Digitally remastered by Bob Sargeant (The Townhouse Studio, London, England).
The English Beat: Saxa, Andy Cox, David Steele, Everett Moreton, Ranking Roger, Dave Wakeling.

I Just Can't Stop It
$8.39 SPECIAL BEAT SERVICE was the English Beat's third and final album. Unlike the high-spirited ska-pop of the band's debut, or its reggae- and dub-flavored second album, SPECIAL BEAT SERVICE is a catch-all effort, featuring a wide variety of styles that range from the samba-flavored pop of "I Confess" to the raw toasting of "Spar Wid Me."

| | Specials CD (1979) Remastered; Enhanced CD
I Just Can't Stop It
$11.35 Produced by Elvis Costello, this self-titled 1979 debut quickly became gospel to the wave of ska then sweeping England. Infusing the catchy, jumpy music developed by artists like the Skatalites and Prince Buster a generation before them with punk's youthful disenfranchisement, bands like the Specials, the Selecter and Madness gave birth to a movement, one which strove for such noble goals as racial unity (then a particularly sore issue in Britain) and non-violence. THE SPECIALS states these ideals magnificently, wrapping them in tunes ...
| | Ike & Tina Turner Nutbush City Limits/Feel Good CD (2006) Bonus Tracks
I Just Can't Stop It
$17.75 Raven's 2006 two-fer Nutbush City Limits/Feel Good combines two of Ike & Tina Turner's last albums together and adds five bonus tracks, three of which were taken from other Ike & Tina albums from the early '70s, one taken from a Tina solo record, and one disco mix of "Nutbush City Limits." The album that arrives first on this two-fer was actually the last of these two to be released: Nutbush City Limits appeared in 1973, a year after Feel Good, but its title track is one of Ike & Tina's best-known songs so it's an appropriate choice to kick off this disc. Besides, the two records are so similar in tone and approach, it'd be easy to assume that Feel Good arrived before Nutbush, but that isn't to say they're interchangeable. Both records are hard day-glo funk, overloaded with ...
