THE BEST OF THE ART OF NOISE is a slightly misleading title. This ten-track compilation from 1989 contains none of Anne Dudley and J.J. Jeczalik's innovative and groundbreaking collaborations with producer/theorist Trevor Horn from 1982 to 1985 (except in the form of themes and motifs which endlessly recur throughout this album and the rest of the Art of Noise's many releases). Also, this compilation contains no re-releases of familiar material, but entirely--and in some cases startlingly--new remixes of the older works.
The compilation focuses on the band's singles, including a drastically altered version of their hit "Legs" called "Legacy," as well as novelties like collaborations with Duane Eddy ("Peter Gunn"), Max Headroom ("Paranoimia"), Dan Ackroyd ("Dragnet '88") and Tom Jones (Prince's "Kiss"). Other tracks include the lovely, orchestral "Opus" and the more sinister "Something Always Happens."
It's a bit confusing, but this pink-covered BEST OF THE ART OF NOISE is not the same collection as the earlier BEST OF THE ART OF NOISE, which sports a blue cover. Unlike the previous BEST OF, this compilation features the African folk-via-techno of "Yebo," the clubby "Instruments of Darkness," and the lilting ambient ballad "Robinson Crusoe."
This disc leads off with the wonderful Dadaist voice collage of "Opus," and includes the group's version of Henry Mancini's "Peter Gunn" (featuring Duane Eddy on guitar) and "Paranoimia" (featuring the voice of 1980s TV icon Max Headroom). Other commercial hits are presented, particularly "Dragnet" (the theme song to the 1988 film remake of the popular TV show) and a reassembling of Prince's "Kiss," complete with bawdy vocals from Tom Jones. Although little of the group's early work appears, there is plenty of cut-and-paste fun to be had here with one of the '80s most intriguing and versatile studio outfits.

Entertainment Weekly (1/17/97, p.64) - "In the early '80s, Art Of Noise forged an eclectic mix of club grooves, atmospheric soundscapes, and rock panache that prefigured '90s techno and ambient....their BEST OF...could still pack dance floors..." - Rating: B+ Best Of The Art Of Noise Music Best Of The Art Of Noise Music Review Average Rating: (3.5 out of 5 stars) Decent, but missing their best work The difference between this and the original best-of collection, with the blue cover, is that this one has three newer tracks as mentioned above.... but has none of the three singles from their first album, Who's Afraid of the Art of Noise. This includes their two best-known original songs, Moments in Love and Close to the Edit (you know, the video with the little girl using a chainsaw.) I assume this is due to some kind of record company dispute. So I can't recommend this disc alone to someone looking for an introduction to Art of Noise.
Nonetheless, the material presented here is mostly great, and the tracks that replaced Beat Box, Moments in Love and Close to the Edit are pretty good. There are also some tracks available here that can't be found anywhere else domestically (Opus and Something Always Happens) that echo their early sound while foreshadowing their later, more ambient material, and by themselves they were worth the purchase for me. I would suggest picking this up along with Daft, which contains essentially their entire first album plus earlier singles, especially since both releases are budget-priced.

What a cool blast from the past! Just too cool! I enjoyed listening to stuff that made MTV what it is today! So did my teens! Submitted by Doug (Valparaiso, Fl) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Best Of The Art Of Noise CD music
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. | | Mike Bloomfield Super Session CD (1968) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Best Of The Art Of Noise songs
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").

Best Of The Art Of Noise songs
$9.49 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
Gorgeous and vibrant, SPEAK OF THE DEVIL boasts the strong crooning of Chris Isaak backed by the full-bodied, twanging guitar that's made his music such a distinctive pleasure since the mid-'80s. Isaak's focus on love and the different phases of relationships means that songs range from the built-up desperation in "Please" to the airy optimism of "Flying," punched up by chirpy background singers.
