Mozart: Adagios
$38.49 DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts. Personnel includes: Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts (vocals, guitar); Duane Allman (guitar, dobro, background vocals); Paul Hornsby, Scott Boyer, Elvin Bishop, Tommy Talton, Steve Beckmeier, Rickey Hirsch, John Hug, Dan Toler (guitar); John Hughley (steel guitar); Tom Doucette (harmonica); Steve Madaio, Pat Rizzo, Dave Luell (horns); Steve Miller, Chuck Leavell (piano); Dale Betts, Neil Larson (keyboards); Reese Wynans (organ); Bob Keller, Pete Carr, David Brown, Berry Oakley, Lamar Williams, Willie Weeks, Ken Tibbets, David Goldflies (bass); Maynard Portwood, Johnny Sandlin, Butch Trucks, Jaimoe, Bill Stewart, David Warshaw (drums); Maeretha Stewart, Helene Mills, Buck Rambo, Dottie Rambo, Reba Rambo, Don Johnson (background vocals). Producers include: Dallas Smith, Adrian Barber, Tom Dowd, Johnny Sandlin, Allman Brothers Band. Compilation producer: Bill Levenson. Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson. Spanning four discs and nearly 100 tracks, Dreams is one of those rare box sets that tells a story while delivering the definitive word on its subject. Its success has a lot to do with its status as Polygram/Bill Levinson's sequel to the acclaimed hit Crossroads, which summarized Eric Clapton's winding career perfectly. They follow the same approach here, gathering pre-Allman's recordings from the clan, including cuts by the Allman Joys, selecting the hits from the classic years, and adding stray cuts by solo projects to the mix. It's a smart move and it results in a terrific box that truly offers the definitive word on one of the longest-running dramas in Southern rock. Yes, the Allmans reunited rather successfully after this box, so none of that material is here,

| | John Coltrane Stellar Regions CD (1967)
Mozart: Adagios
$12.35 STELLAR REGIONS consists of Coltrane's entire February 15, 1967 recording session. All selections were previously unavailable--except "Offering," which appeared on EXPRESSION. Personnel: John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Alice Coltrane (piano); Jimmy Garrison (bass); Rashied Ali (drums). Producers: John Coltrane, Bob Thiele. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on February 15, 1967. Includes liner notes by David A. Wild. Personnel: John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Alice Coltrane (piano); Rashied Ali (drums). Liner Note Author: David Wild. Recording information: Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, NJ (02/15/1967). Photographers: Chuck Stewart; Jim Marshall . This is a major set, "new" music from John Coltrane that was recorded February 15, 1967, (five months before his death) but not released for the first time until 1995. One of several "lost" sessions that were stored by Alice Coltrane for decades, only one selection ("Offering" which was on Expression) among the eight numbers and three alternates was ever out before. The music, although well worth releasing, offers no real hints as to what Coltrane might have been playing had he lived into the 1970s. The performances by the quartet (with pianist Alice Coltrane, bassist Jimmy Garrison, and drummer Rashied Ali) are briefer (from two-and-a-half to five-plus minutes) than Coltrane's recordings of the previous year, but that might have been due to the fact that this music was played in the studio (as opposed to the marathon live blowouts with Pharoah Sanders) or to Coltrane's worsening health. Actually 'Trane (who sticks exclusively to tenor here) is as powerful as usual, showing no compromise in his intense flights, and indulging in sound explorations that are as free (but with purpose) as any he had ever done. Coltrane's true fans will want to go out of their way to acquire this intriguing CD. ~ Scott Yanow Producer Bob Thiel
| | Frank Zappa - The Dub Room Special DVD (1982)
Mozart: Adagios
$11.49 Starting in 1974 and continuing for nearly a decade, Frank Zappa's annual Halloween concerts were a New York City institution. When the avant-rocker scored a Top 40 hit with "Valley Girl" in 1982, he skipped that year's Halloween performance and instead chose to premiere a 90-minute documentary called FRANK ZAPPA'S DUB ROOM at New York's Ritz Theater. Produced, directed, written, conducted, composed, arranged, and performed by Zappa, the documentary was comprised of two concerts--the 1981 Halloween show at the Palladium, and the December 1974 KCET television special, A TOKEN OF HIS EXTREME--as well as animation by claymation artist and longtime Zappa collaborator, Bruce Bickford. Released on home video in 1982, the Dub Room special has long remained a hard-to-find rarity, but this program rewards Zappa devotees with a presentation of the documentary in its entirety (albeit in a slightly different version after being remastered in 1992) for a fitting tribute to rock's ultimate renaissance man.

| | Peter Gabriel - Still Growing Up Live & Unwrapped DVDs (2005)
Mozart: Adagios
$23.29 Two programs featuring the remarkable music and personality of Peter Gabriel are featured here. In the LIVE section, a complement to 2003's GROWING UP LIVE, director Hamish Hamilton captures still more of Gabriel's legendary live shows, this time at smaller and more intimate European venues, rather than spectacular arenas. In UNWRAPPED, Anna Gabriel directs a segment exploring the origins and stories behind Gabriel's songs, which includes exclusive footage of some of his stripped-down, bare-bones performances.
