DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts.
Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson.
Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including enough unreleased tracks and rarities to appeal to the band's most devoted fans. As a result, DREAMS is neither the definitive Allman Brothers collection nor the gift to hardcore fans that, say, THE BOOTLEG SERIES is to Dylan-philes.

This excellent two-disc collection captures Poco's finest moments from the days when they were laying down the template for all the country-rock music that was to follow. It's hard to remember, but when the Eagles first hit the scene, they were thought by many to be a Poco-wannabe band. Listen to this set and you'll hear why. The Forgotten Trail (1969-1974) culls tracks from Poco's first eight albums, as well as unreleased cuts and singles. From the classic anthem "Pickin' Up the Pieces," which kicks things off, through "You Better Think Twice," "C'mon," "Kind Woman," "From the Inside," "A Good Feelin' to Know," "Crazy Eyes," and on and on, this is wonderful music, ahead of its time in many ways. It's impossible not to visualize the movie's slaughter, new to cinema, when hearing the death knells and terrified synths of "Suddenly.The Czarist Soldiers" -- even if you just listen to this CD. Though one wonders why you would want this CD version when you can listen to this and also watch the DVD version simultaneously released instead, it's an incredible movie, and like Tom Verlaine's recent solo guitar soundtracks for pre-talkies, you get the full effect of the aural massage. Otherwise, even on CD, Del Rey's work is like a film in and of itself, sparking wild imagination. Good pressed cardboard sleeves for the CD, too. ~ Jack Rabid
Battleship Potemkin is Jackson Del Rey's homage to director Sergei Eisenstein's classic silent film. In his writings, Eisenstein stated that he hoped a new score would be written for the Battleship Potemkin every ten years. Eisenstein felt that although the imagery of the film would remain vital and vibrant, new music would help 'update' the film and thereby aid its introduction to subsequent generations of moviegoers. The Battleship Potemkin was originally screened in Moscow in October of 1925. Interestingly, in 2005, (the 80th anniversary of Potemkin) the Pet Shop Boys (I'm not kidding) were commissioned to compose a new soundtrack thereby 'fulfilling' Eisenstein's wishes. However, the score by the Pet Shop Boys fails to capture and/or convey any of the unique drama or historical context that led the valiant sailors aboard the Potemkin to mutiny against the tyrannical rule of Czar Nicholas. And quite frankly, the 80's era Pet Shop Boys apparently haven't bought any new synthesizers lately and their score sounds, well, dated. Perhaps they ...
