Contains 14 theatrical songs from failed stage productions, conducted by Michael Reed. Includes liner notes by Sheridan Morley. Sarah Brightman's The Songs That Got Away delivers what the title promises: a collection of 14 of Brightman's favorite songs that are more obscure to the general public. These little-known show tunes include works by Irving Berlin, Leonard Bernstein, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, Noël Coward, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and other great songwriters, making this album worthwhile not only for Brightman fans, but musical theater historians as well. ~ Heather Phares THE SONGS THAT GOT AWAY is a novel idea that was originated by Sarah's ex-husband, Andrew Lloyd Weber. This album is made up of songs that were removed early from Broadway or London shows, or from productions that didn't run for very long. And after one listen, it's easy to see that these songs hold up just as well as the most popular show tunes of all time. Sarah closed the '80s--a decade during which she was best known for her marvelous work in CATS and PHANTOM OF THE OPERA--with this memorable solo album. "Meadowlark" is a haunting piece from Stephen Schwartz's THE BAKER'S WIFE. "Mr. Monotony" is a beautiful number that's perfectly suited for Sarah's sweet voice. The song has actually been recorded a total of three times in its history. "Dreamers" is a wonderful melody from the critically panned JEAN SEBERG. Sarah Brightman's inspiring, sparrow-like voice is perfect for resurrecting these buried treasures. The album was produced by Weber and received conducting contributions from Marvin Hamlisch. These songs are perfect listening for fans of the genre.

| Songs That Got Away Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews These are Good Songs! How did they get Away! This CD has songs that for some reason or another were cut from shows. While they are unfamiliar, many are quite good and you will wonder how they could have been left out of their productions. Meadowlark is captivating and Mr. Monotony is very clever. You won't be disappointed by this collection. Many are gems. Submitted by captdennis (Charleston, SC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

A VERY WONDRFUL ALBUM The album THE SONGS THAT GOT AWAY is from 1989, when Sarah and Andrew Lloyd Webber were married. Andrew is producer and it was his idea to record the songs. The beautiful songs are from musicals.
1.MEADOWLARK a beautiful song about a bird and a blind girl, who get her sight.
2.I AM GOING TO LIKE IT HERE+12.AWAY FROM YOU by Richard Rodgers. Sarah sings the songs so beautiful. Sarah has sang Richard Rodgers songs before in CAROUSEL from 1987.
3.I REMEMBER, a very beautiful song. Here you can hear how much Sarah’s voice has improved – if you listen to songs on albums recorded after 1996, Timeless, Eden, La Luna and Classics.
4.MR. MONOTONY by Irving Berlin. Sarah is so talented - her voice is so warm and bright - no matter what style she sings: opera, musical or pop. Here she sings jazz/swing – and her voice is amazing.
5.DREAMERS, 6.SILENT HEART, 10.WHAT MAKES ME LOVING HIM?, wonderful.
7.LUD’S WEDDING by Bernstein.
8.THREE-CORNERED TUNE, here Sarah sings three-part with herself.
9.IF I EVER FALL IN LOVE AGAIN, has the sound like a Andrew Lloyd Webber-tune.
11.CHI IL BEL SOGNO DI DORETTA by Puccini.
13.IF LOVES WERE ALL, maybe the best song on this album.
14.HALF A MOMENT by Andrew Lloyd Webber.
This is my favourite among the albums that Sarah has released before 1997. I can highly recommend it. It’s incredible beautiful.

A Most Welcome Reissue This is an excellent collection of theatre songs, beautifully sung by Sarah Brightman, who displays the range and versatility of her voice. Some of the numbers are operatic in nature, others (such as "I Am Going to Like It Here" from Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Flower Drum Song," are pieces originally written for singers with limited vocal range. Remember that Ms. Brightman recorded her version of "Meadowlark" before it became the frequently-recorded staple that it has since become. Her rendition of this great Stephen Schwartz song is still one of the best, and beautifully demonstrates Brightman's rarely heard high belt. Marvin Hamlisch's "Dreamers" is a gem, definitely one of his best compositions. The Bock and Harnick song "What Makes Me Love Him?" from "The Apple Tree" is perfectly suited to what we might identify as Brightman's "typical" style. This CD is a must-have if you are a fan of Sarah Brightman and/or theatre music. Submitted by a reviewer (Cranston, R.I.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A voice as beautiful as a medowlark This album is great! I love the fact that Sarah's work on hear is not typical of the normal Lloyd Webber work she usally does. I love Meadowlark, Lud's Wedding, and the cleverness of the Three-Cornered Tune.
This is a must have album for any Sarah Fan. Submitted by a reviewer (Lakewood, WA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
