Pianist Joe Sample was a pioneer at creating melodic and accessible pop-jazz. His recordings of the 1970s and '80s were consistently popular, especially this best-seller. Sample is joined on most selections by fellow Crusader Stix Hooper on drums; electric bassist Abraham Laboriel; percussionist Paulinho Da Costa; and, often, guitarist Dean Parks. Flutist Hubert Laws guests on "Midnight and Mist." Although it would not be considered creative jazz, the catchy and often-memorable melodies, and Sample's fine playing, makes this CD reissue a pretty definitive example of his solo recordings. ~ Scott Yanow
Personnel: Joe Sample (piano, keyboards); Dean Parks (guitar, electric guitar); Paul Jackson, Jr. (guitar); Milton Jackson, Jr. (electric guitar); Hubert Laws (flute); Robert Wilson, Stix Hooper (drums); Paulinho Da Costa (percussion).

Carmel CD music
$11.99 Digitally remastered by Jim Phillips (Universal Mastering Studios West, North Hollywood, California).
Although it omits three songs from the far less comprehensive (and deleted) 1983 12-track Best Of, and doesn't include any live or post-A&M music, this 2000 release stands as the final word on the Ozark Mountain Daredevils' career. Cherry-picking 21 tunes from their five studio album stint circa 1974-1978 -- with the lion's share coming from their first three albums and only three selections from the final two -- this is pretty much all you'll need from the under-recognized band that ...

Carmel music CDs
$13.49 Dave Peck is one of those pianists who helps one understand why certain songs have been labeled "standards." They represent that core of American popular music which challenges the likes of great jazz pianists to take full advantage of the improvisational opportunities they offer. For his fifth album for his Let's Play Stella outfit, Peck, in trio format, successfully takes on the test of giving ...
