Some critics have tagged this the best blues release of 1999; others weren't nearly as kind. It's a beauty-is-in-the-ear-of-the-beholder situation. Blues "purists" who lament the fact that very few artists today are playing down-home, traditional blues will very much enjoy and appreciate this return to the roots. Fans of more contemporary styles might quickly grow tired of the intense, piercing vocals and upper-register slide guitar work. There are ten originals and two covers (Robert Nighthawk's "Crying Won't Help You" and Sunnyland Slim's "It's You Baby"). Most of the tunes are sparse, gritty duets with either James Cotton on harp, Alvin Youngblood Hart on guitar/vocals, or Kenny "Blues Boss" Wayne on piano. Walker sings and plays dobro on the only solo track "Talk to Me." If you long for a modern-day artist with the delivery of a Robert Johnson or a Howlin' Wolf and you like your blues pure and raw, Silvertone Blues is right up your alley. ~ Ann Wickstrom

No Depression (1-2/00, p.89) - "...Walker moves comfortably from acoustic to electric blues, plays expressively in a variety of styles, writes well, and has a tremendous voice..." Mojo (Publisher) (2/00, p.100) - "...Walker [has] one of the most readily recognisable styles in the blues....this album is fine Walker Black Label, full of flavor and subtlety....a record with an emphatically modern character - and some of his most gripping perfromances yet." | | Junior Wells Hoodoo Man Blues CD (1965)
Silvertone Blues
$9.85 HOODOO MAN BLUES is one of the great albums from the era of classic Chicago blues. Though usually overshadowed by mid-century Chicago legends like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, Junior Wells ranks among the most dynamic and satisfying performers of the milieu, and his explosive harmonica playing and charismatic vocals come through like gangbusters on this 1965 release. The record has the added distinction of being one of the first long-playing blues albums to hit the scene (blues had largely been confined to 45s prior to its release).
The sessions benefit from notably clean production and fine musicianship (Buddy Guy appears on lead guitar). The band is energetic and plays with equal parts precision and abandon, creating ...

Silvertone Blues
$17.09 Jazz saxophonist Irv Williams is considered a treasure in the Twin Cities music community, a veteran tenor player with a mastery of melody and a warm, burnished tone. Since his 85th birthday in 2004, Irv has released two CDs, both of them receiving enormous praise and press coverage. “That's All” was selected one of the Top 20 Local Albums of 2004 by the Minneapolis Star Tribune, right alongside Prince, Heiruspecs and other Twin Cites luminaries. Describing Irv's 2005 CD “Dedicated To You” in the Star Tribune, Tom Surowicz remarked, “It's one thing to be prolific and vital at age 85. It's quite another for an artist to be doing some of his best work.” On the new CD “Duo,” Irv is joined by Peter Schimke, one of the Twin Cities most in-demand piano players. Peter's career began in the heady rock scene of the late 70s / early 80s as drummer with The New Psychenauts. Peter has gone on to perform with people like Mark Murphy, Billy Preston, ...
