1963's THE BODY & THE SOUL finds a 25-year-old Freddie Hubbard commanding three different ensembles. The first ensemble is a stellar septet that features the sublime Eric Dolphy on alto saxophone and flute and Hubbard's frequent collaborator, Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone. One highlight is a gentle and memorable rendition of the classic "Body and Soul," with Hubbard's improvisations sliding closely around the well-loved melody. Dolphy's ethereal flute provides a parenthetical introduction and coda. Where the septet shows Hubbard in familiar light, the larger ensembles show evidence of his young talent ready to blossom.

For the second and third ensembles, Shorter is back, serving as conductor and arranger and expanding into big-band and string arrangements. Though it would seem that such a lineup might heavily favor avant-garde experimentalism, two older standards, "Skylark," by Hoagy Charmichael, and "I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)," by Duke Ellington, are given reverential treatments. Hubbard's playing is sensuous and articulate throughout. THE BODY & THE SOUL features two of the most formidable players and composers of '60s and '70s jazz expanding into new territory, all the while holding true to the music's rich history.

Down Beat (5/97, p.75) - 4.5 (out of 5 Stars) - "...a modern mainstreamer who blew with the ferocity of Trane, the lithe melodicism of Bird. That's the Hubbard you hear on THE BODY & THE SOUL, a prime 1963 recording that places him both in a sextet...and in a big band/string setting with Shorter arranging and conducting..."

Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) 5 stars

5 stars Brilliance of the beginning sixties
This album leaves the listener emotionally moved. Eric Dolphy plays excellent solos and seems to fit in this tonal environment created by Wayne Shorter for a Hubbard who really is cooking over. Not completely understood in its time I think the feverish atmosphere of this record is more apt in our time.

On Hub Cap, his third effort as a leader, Freddie Hubbard sticks to the tried-and-true hard bop formula, which is something of a mixed blessing. There's no question that much of this music is enjoyable, but it's not quite up to the standards of its two predecessors. Part of the problem is Hubbard's sextet, which features tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath, trombonist Julian Priester, pianist Cedar Walton, ...

Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios). This Deluxe Edition of COLTRANE includes a bonus disc of previously unissued material. McCoy Tyner (piano); Jimmy Garrison (bass); Elvin Jones (drums). John Coltrane's albums, especially the ones he recorded in the 1960s, can usually be assessed as either groundbreaking or "ground holding" (that is, Coltrane would develop trails he'd previously blazed). COLTRANE (1962) may fall into the latter category, but that doesn't make it any less satisfying. Featuring the great saxophonist's legendary quartet (pianist McCoy Tyner, drummer Elvin Jones, and bassist Jimmy Garrison), COLTRANE is packed with spectacular playing, especially on the lengthy, winding "Out of This World," the pulsing, Eastern-tinged "Tunji," and the hard bop-flavored "Miles' Mode." Recorded one month after DAKAR, COLTRANE explores many similar directions, and again features the tenor saxophonist as part of a three-horn front line, albeit with baritone saxophone and a trumpeter. It also showcases Texan Red Garland on the first three cuts, while DAKAR pianist Mal Waldron is featured on the final three. The rhythm team of Albert Heath and Paul Chambers gives COLTRANE a more centered rhythm feel than its predecessor, as the bass player's huge beat and elegant harmonic sense set the pace on both ballads and hard hard-driving swing pieces. Drummer Heath introduces "Bakal" with an African rhythm motif supported by bass and baritone counterpoint, as Coltrane and trumpeter Johnnie Splawn essay the chanting melody before breaking into a swinging bridge that is pure Max Roach-Clifford Brown in its steely articulation and sweet voicings. Garland's spacious, laid-back statement sets the stage for Coltrane's ...
