Like the legendary A LOVE SUPREME, John Coltrane's CRESCENT is one of the most revered albums of his career. The classic Coltrane quartet is in prime form as Tyner, Garrison and Jones form a tight bond with their leader in a stunning display of expression and musical interaction. Coltrane stretches and contorts his sound to construct solos of mesmerizing beauty as on the opening title track.

The brooding ballad "Wise One" is a free-form lilt that meanders its way through the haunting melody while Jones' cymbals surge and swell in support. The classic blues of "Bessie's Blues" and the exceptional "Lonnie's Lament" provide examples of this group's ability to express powerful moods on both ends of the emotional spectrum. The grand finale "The Drum Thing" reflects a Middle Eastern influence as Coltrane's snaking melody floats above Jones' churning solo that eventually erupts into an explosive torrent of sound.

Digitally remastered by Eric Labson (MCA Studios).

Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on April 27 and June 1, 1964. Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff and Michael Cuscuna.

John Coltrane Quartet: John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); McCoy Tyner (piano); Jimmy Garrison (bass); Elvin Jones (drums).

Producer: Bob Thiele.

Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna.

5 stars IF YOU COULD BUY ONE COLTRANE ALBUM..............
I'm not going to waste any time, space,or words. This is The John Coltrane Quartet's best studio album. If I were you,the buyer,I'd take advantage of those sample clips of the songs and see if it fits your fancy. If I had to break down the album,I'd say each song features or highlights the talent of 1 of the 4 members."Crescent"-John Coltrane/"Wise One"-McCoy Tyner (I love his little chord solo in the beginning when Trane lays out!)/"Bessie's Blues"-Credits the whole ensemble's ability to play 'together'./"Lonnie's Lament"- JIMMY GARRISON!!!!!!(BEST BASSIST EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!.....next to Mingus)/"The Drum Thing"-Elvin Jones, ofcourse;whose playing should not go unrecognized in any of the other previous tracks. And if you do purchase this album, cherish it,don't make the same mistake I did and scratch it. Enjoy

5 stars More awesome Coltrane
There have been so many Coltrane releases, many of which are very good to awesome, but there has also been too much released, almost to the detriment of Coltrane's talent. Pre-Impulse era Coltrane, namely 1955 thru 1960 is usually very popular because of Miles and many other jazz luminaries, with Coltrane's own "Giant Steps" in 1960 for Atlantic records being possibly a peak, but this "Crescent" package (1964) is one of the great Impulse releases, and luckily for us, that still adds up to several discs from 1961 thru 1964. Coltrane's last period, 1965-1967, still has some gems left, but is best left to die hard Coltrane fans who have already tapped into all of his great stuff from 1955-1964.

Miles Davis Kind Of Blue CD  (1959) Bonus Track; Remastered

With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation. By emphasizing the blues and the improvisor's melodic gifts, KIND OF BLUE precipitated a major stylistic development--modal jazz. Charles Mingus had experimented with pedal points throughout the 1950s, and the melodic freedom of Ornette Coleman's Atlantic sides was also predicated on freedom from chord changes. But KIND OF BLUE was to prove the most influential, enduring work of its kind. There was just such a vibe about these 1959 sessions--Miles' lyric genius and burgeoning stardom, the innovative voicings and rarefied touch of pianist Bill Evans, the electrifying presence of Coltrane and Cannonball--that some ...

Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Mark Wilder and Rob Schwarz (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). Miles Davis' restless curiosity would never allow him to look back, and as a result, he sought out new blood and fresh challenges over the course of six decades of innovation. When modernists such as Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor and John Coltrane began stretching the parameters of form and improvisation in the early '60s, Davis was leery, even hostile at first. But as the saying goes, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em--and by 1964 Miles had assembled his own dream team of innovative young turks, who began to vivisect the entire Davis book, before moving confidently into uncharted waters. MILES SMILES marks a sea change in which the Miles Davis Quintet really begins to stretch out and confront the avant-garde with a modern thrust of their own--resulting in one of the greatest jazz recordings of all time. Performances such as "Orbits" and "Ginger Bread Boy" redefine all notions of swing, as Ron Carter and Tony Williams treat the ...

Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios). 1965 was a seminal year for the John Coltrane Quartet, a period in which the leader instigated a bold cycle of exploratory new directions, leading to such extended free jazz rites as ASCENSION and MEDITATIONS. Yet for all the emotional turbulence and the protracted solo flights, THE JOHN COLTRANE QUARTET PLAYS finds the saxophonist taking an affectionate, powerful backwards glance at the foundation of his quartet's collective sound. From the opening strains of "Chim Chim Cheree," it's obvious that this unlikely tune represents a return to the near-Eastern style of incantation which made "My Favorite Things" such a hypnotic vehicle for extended improvisation. McCoy Tyner's tart, chanting chords and Jimmy Garrison's elliptical vamp pare all the sentimentality away from the tune, providing a sultry rhythmic/harmonic ambience for Trane's freewheeling soprano flights. While the relative ...

Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios). This Deluxe Edition of COLTRANE includes a bonus disc of previously unissued material. McCoy Tyner (piano); Jimmy Garrison (bass); Elvin Jones (drums). John Coltrane's albums, especially the ones he recorded in the 1960s, can usually be assessed as either groundbreaking or "ground holding" (that is, Coltrane would develop trails he'd previously blazed). COLTRANE (1962) may fall into the latter category, but that doesn't make it any less satisfying. Featuring the great saxophonist's legendary quartet (pianist McCoy Tyner, drummer Elvin Jones, and bassist Jimmy Garrison), COLTRANE is packed with spectacular playing, especially on the lengthy, winding "Out of This World," the pulsing, Eastern-tinged "Tunji," and the hard bop-flavored "Miles' Mode." Recorded one month after DAKAR, COLTRANE explores many similar directions, and again features the tenor saxophonist as part of ...

This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of ...

Circle Of Life
Freedom Call Circle Of Life CD  (2005)

Crescent CD music
CD $14.65  4 stars
Studio release number four brings that spine tingling progressive sound to your town. Power metal has never distinguished itself as the most adventurous of metallic subgenres; in fact, if anything, it represents the exact opposite by obeying most of the core devices most often acknowledged as "classic" or inherent to the form. To that end, most would agree that Germany's Freedom Call have, over the course of their first few albums, been an asset to this philosophy by embodying power metal at its most steadfast and true. Or, as their detractors would call it: generic. Whatever one's opinion, the merits of the group's fourth full-length, 2005's The Circle of Life, will prove just as polarizing -- what with its frequent examples of anthemic, fist-in-the-air, hearty male chorus-powered material ("Starlight," "Hero Nation," "The Eternal Flame," naturally the title track) continually doing their name justice. Elsewhere, however, Freedom Call's short-term memories may have brought them a tad too close to their influences for comfort, on this occasion. For example, the staccato riff driving "Kings and Queens" seems ready to evolve into Ozzy Osbourne's "Centre of Eternity" at any moment; the techno-inflected "Rhythm of Life" bears disturbing similarities to the Scorpions' dated 1988 single "The Rhythm of Love"; and, most glaring of them all, "Carry On" is a virtual, although seemingly inadvertent, rewrite of Manowar's song by the same name of almost 20 years earlier! Common sense of course suggests ...
