| | Sonny Rollins Alfie CD Sonny Rollins Discography of CDs
Original music from the Paramount motion picture Alfie composed by Sonny Rollins; arranged and conducted by Oliver Nelson.
Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios).
Tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins loans his flair for the dramatic to the score for the film ALFIE, accompanying the story of what the liner notes describe as, "the involuntary education of a hipster." Arranged by Oliver Nelson, ALFIE follows the character's evolution from the carefree, rakish lothario of "Alfie's Theme" to the contemplative, somewhat broken man reflected in "Alfie's Theme Differently."
Rollins attempts to capture the textures of life through his incisive and energetic playing, his coherent improvisations, and variations on musical themes. While "Alfie's Theme" and its variants make the most lasting impression, "He's Younger Than You Are" is touching, laced with regret. And the sensual, relaxed "On Impulse" has a nice sense of immediacy.
Anyone hearing "Blind Leading the Blind" or "Old Habits Die Hard" might assume that they were listening to outtakes from the Rolling Stones' 1971 album STICKY FINGERS. In fact, the songs are from 2004's ALFIE soundtrack, primarily a collaboration between Stones vocalist Mick Jagger and producer/Eurythmics mastermind Dave Stewart. What makes the Jagger-sung tracks reminiscent of his older work is their loose, organic feel and simple acoustic guitar/bass/drums/piano instrumentation. The legendary artist is also showcased on several instrumental pieces in his capacity as harmonica player, contributing raw, edgy work reminiscent of his formative years on the London blues scene. Elsewhere, Stewart leaves the lead vocals to younger folks, including a stirring Joss Stone rendition of Burt Bacharach's title song from the original ALFIE film, and the showy, soul revue-style "Darkness of Your Love," delivered by ex-Parliment/Funkadelic member Gary "Mudbone" Cooper.

Alfie CD music
$10.29 With the release of Robert Altman's M*A*S*H in 1970, a new form of comedy was born, one that would help to forever change the face of cinema. Altman's audacious film reflected the American counterculture's growing distrust of religion and government in the late 1960s and early 1970s, resulting in one of the biggest box office smashes of its time. Introducing the techniques he would employ throughout his storied career--overlapping dialogue, a constantly moving camera with a heavy amount of zooming, and a bold combination of frank subject matter with cynical humor--Altman immediately vaulted himself to Hollywood's upper ranks. Based on the novel by Richard Hooker, M*A*S*H follows a group of Mobile Army Surgical Hospital officers as they perform surgery and pass the time just miles from the front lines of the Korean conflict. Led by sardonic captains "Hawkeye" Pierce (Donald Sutherland) and "Trapper" John McIntyre (Elliott Gould), the film has the feel of an absurd three-ring circus. Other characters ...
| | Seven Steps: The Complete Columbia Recordings Of Miles Davis: 1963-1964 CDs (2004) Limited Edition

All tracks have been digitally mastered using 24-bit technology.
In the 1960s, trumpeter Miles Davis became a star outside of the jazz world, first with what history refers to as "the Quintet" with Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock, then with his highly influential post-BITCHES BREW electric bands. But there was a "transitional" period, after John Coltrane left Davis's employ and before the Shorter/Hancock era, which the SEVEN STEPS box set based around the SEVEN STEPS TO HEAVEN album documents in its entirety, often in a live context.
Davis was seeking the right combination of musicians for his sonic flights, where hard-bop and modal styles could be combined with a wide-open, increasingly elastic sound. Before settling on Shorter (present here), he tried the conventionally hearty, blues-accented bop approach of saxophonist George Coleman and the rippling, somewhat more avant-garde Sam Rivers. Both soar and sear at their respective best, providing remarkable contrast to Davis's magically cool horn. UK-born pianist Victor Feldman plays on some tracks, Hancock on others; the drum chair features Tony Williams (also an explorer of avant expression) and Frank Butler (a crackling, swinging mainstream bopper). SEVEN STEPS includes ...
| | Sonny Stitt New York Jazz CD (1956) Remastered; Digipak
Alfie songs
$9.05 Sonny Stitt was so closely identified with Charlie Parker on the alto that even when he played tenor, his style was of the quicker-than-lightning variety with all the notes he could pack in a phrase in his soloing. Which makes listening to him, for all but the most ardent bebop fans, an endurance contest no matter how agile he was. Here, in a 1956 session with Ray Brown and Jo and Jimmy Jones backing him, there is some tempering of the maelstrom that Stitt conjured up on every bandstand. Half the program is ballads, including "The Stars Fell on Alabama," a gorgeous "Body & Soul," and "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea." While these cuts show an uncharacteristic restraint from Stitt, the midtempo tunes, such as "Down Home Blues," "Alone Together," and "If I Had You," still reveal his insistence on streaking everything into the blue despite a rhythm section that wishes to hold the tunes within recognizable tempos. It's no problem for Stitt; he just plays twice or three times as fast. This is a good session, but like all of Stitt's records, wears thin after about six cuts. ~ Thom Jurek

| | Johnny Coles Little Johnny C CD (1963) Remastered
Alfie album
$8.45 Although this Blue Note session (reissued on CD in 1996) is led by trumpeter Johnny Coles, pianist Duke Pearson (who contributed the arrangements and five of the six compositions) really functioned as leader. The typically impressive Blue Note lineup (which includes Leo Wright on alto and flute, tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, bassist Bob Cranshaw, and either Walter Perkins or Pete LaRoca on drums, in addition to Coles and Pearson) handles the obscure material with creative invention. Most memorable are the catchy title cut and the somber ballad "So Sweet My Little Girl." Cole's brittle trumpet is the lead voice throughout, although ...
| | Jeri Brown I've Got Your Number CD (1999)
Alfie CD music
$13.79 The torch has been passed, Betty Carter is gone, and Jeri Brown is in line here and now. On this, her seventh CD for the Canadian Justin Time label, Brown continues to mature as a jazz interpreter, and proves a cherry picker in terms of choosing world class back-up. As on her previous CD "Zaius, " she's got John Hicks on piano throughout, Curtis Lundy and Wali Muhammad on four cuts, Avery Sharpe and Sangoma Everett for another three on bass and drums respectively. David Murray plays tenor sax on two tracks, Don Braden on another one, and two selections reprise the appearance as on "Zaius" of vocalist Leon Thomas. The difference is that these duels with Thomas are released posthumously following his untimely death in mid-1999. Brown's voice is getting decidedly better and better, he lower register center profoundly richening, and her confidence building. You should further appreciate in Brown, traces of Sarah Vaughan's range and expressiveness, Ella Fitzgerald's clear enunciation, and Carter and Ella's super scatting powers. This combination produces a singer unlike any other on the current scene. Brown's eminent scatability is fully pronounced on the title track, the wild 5/4 duet with Thomas and Braden plus ensemble on "Long As You're Living," and in a more undercurrent, low down arena with sympatico ostinato bass (Lundy) on "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise." There's a 12 1/2 minute, lugubrious slow version of "You Must Believe In Spring," seperate verses sung in French & English with a long Hicks solo, a subtle rubato format for Brown and Hicks only during "The Nearness Of You," and other beautifully turned out ballads "Midnight Sun" (w/Murray, ) and the closer "What Goes Around." Murray's other feature, the Gerry Niewood waltz "Joy" has Brown & the saxophonist in a surreal unison setting that bears a second or third listening. The cherry-on-the sundae is the modal, Coltrane-ish Thomas piece "Echoes," as they trade yodels, yelps, oohs and ahhhs. This CD is easily as tasteful and skilled as her others, but not yet her magnum opus. She's getting close, and has surpassed others, including several more popular singers in term of heart, soul and warmth. ~ Michael G. Nastos
