FURTHER DEFINITIONS is a serious contender for Benny Carter's most essential disc (though he churned out astounding amounts of high-quality work for more than 70 years). This 1961 album was a revisitation of a '37 session Carter cut with Coleman Hawkins, Django Reinhardt, and two European saxophonists. Hawkins brings his glorious tenor back for the '61 set, while guitarist John Collins fills Reinhardt's shoes. Charlie Rouse appears on tenor sax, with Phil Woods on alto, while the crack rhythm section of Dick Katz (piano), Jimmy Garrison (bass), and Jo Jones (drums) completes the personnel.
The set is, arguably, an improvement on the original, with its beautiful sound engineering, excellent arrangements (the four-horn line approximates a big band at times), and shining solo performances all around. "Honeysuckle Rose" and "Body and Soul" (on which Hawkins, of course, takes a magnificent, extended solo) are here, as are two fine Carter originals, the lush and lazy "Blue Star" and "Doozy," a sprightly bop number. The "Additions to FURTHER DEFINITIONS" section (tracks 9-16), a 1966 session with different personnel and a batch of Carter originals, is an excellent bonus. Carter's trademark attention to superior musicianship and quality characterize both of these highly recommended sessions.

| | Dizzy Gillespie Complete Rca Victor Recordings 1937-1949 CDs (1995)
Further Definitions CD music
$16.09 Digitally remastered by James Nichols (BMG Studios, New York).
THE COMPLETE RCA VICTOR RECORDINGS gathers under one roof all the seminal big-band recordings and small-group sessions Dizzy cut for the label during his great initial burst of creativity following World War II. Some rare Gillespie performances act as historical bookends to this set. There's his early work as a sideman with Teddy Hill and Lionel Hampton, when he was still under the sway of Roy Eldridge. And for the last word, there is the legendary 1949 Metronome All-Star date, featuring Charlie Parker and some of Dizzy's chief acolytes. Trumpeters Fats Navarro and Miles Davis pay tribute to Dizzy's stylistic dominance by engaging the master in an astonishing round-robin dialogue on the long version of "Overtime."

| | Chico Freeman Lenox Avenue Breakdown CD (1978)
Further Definitions music CDs
$13.49 In addition to having excellent cover art (an illustrated cityscape in which a giant saxophone--complete with windows, a doorway, and stoop--takes its place among the neighboring buildings), LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN is also a dynamic, unjustly overlooked jazz album. Prodigiously talented as an instrumentalist and composer, alto saxophonist Arthur Blythe was one of the most innovative jazz musicians of the 1970s and '80s, and LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN, his Columbia Records debut, proves it.
Blythe's ability to marry the best of the genre's traditions (he is equally versed in swing, post-bop, and romantic styles) with his avant-garde leanings is evident here. "Odessa," for ...
| | Tina Brooks True Blue CD (1960) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Further Definitions songs
$8.45 Although a four-LP Mosaic box set purportedly includes every recording led by the obscure but talented tenor saxophonist Tina Brooks, this 1994 CD has previously unreleased alternate takes of "True Blue" and "Good Old Soul" that Mosaic overlooked. Brooks is teamed with the young trumpeter Freddie Hubbard (on one of his earliest sessions), pianist Duke Jordan, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Art Taylor for a set dominated by Brooks' originals. None of the themes may be all that memorable ("Nothing Ever Changes My Love for You" comes the closest), but the hard bop solos are consistently excellent. ~ Scott Yanow

Further Definitions songs
$9.75 This is the first recorded collaboration of baritone saxophone great Gerry Mulligan and the witty alto saxophonist Paul Desmond. Despite hardly any preparation for these recording sessions, the two men complement one another's playing beautifully, as both of them were highly melodic improvisers. Desmond brought three originals to the sessions: the driving "Blues in Time," the soft ballad "Wintersong" (which is based on the chord changes to "These Foolish Things"), and "Battle Hymn of the Republican" (which is actually a complex reworking of "Tea for Two"). Mulligan's contributions include his earlier hit "Line for Lyons," "Stand Still" (based on ...
