The album ASCENSION played a profoundly important role in John Coltrane's final period. Recorded in June 1965, almost exactly two years before his death, this session marks Coltrane's final stepping off point into free jazz. The album also marks a division for Coltrane's fans, as there are some that applaud his final escape from jazz tradition while others simply couldn't follow him into the great unknown.
One way or another, ASCENSION refuses to be ignored. A stunning list of colleagues joins the legendary saxophonist on his final quest. Besides his famed regular quartet, avant-garde saxophonists Pharaoh Sanders and Archie Shepp, extra bassist Art Davis, and even trumpet star Freddie Hubbard, among others, produce an intense sonic assault. If you're sensitive to dissonant noise and uncontrolled barrages of sound, ASCENSION will offer you no comfort. However, the unbridled emotional onslaught that Coltrane unleashes here dwarfs any other artist's entire output. Love it or hate it, this is one disc that's sure to stay on your mind long after its din has faded.

Down Beat (12/00, p.94) - 5 stars out of 5 - "...There is no more radical free-jazz statement than 1965's ASCENSION....this album roars and soars beyond its milieu to become one for the ages and is Coltrane's most difficult statement for jazz traditionalists to follow..." easy listening...not! I am a big fan of Trane. This work is pure genius, which makes it tough to dig for dummies like me. I would believe it if someone told me that Igor Stravinsky composed this during a psychotic episode. In fact, Trane pulls Stravinsky into the ring, picks him up, twirls around, and throws him down, then hits him with a metal folding chair, then climbs up on the ropes and does a splash on him, sending him through the floorboards. Poor Igor! Poor anyone who can listen to both versions at one sitting. Any Coltrane fan should hear this once--borrow it from someone. Submitted by Dave (Cleveland, OH, USA) Was This Review Helpful? right man on right place Zappa has absolutley right: music is the best. And in music Coltrane was the closest person who can show us: what is behind that courtain? Energy, beauty, eternity. I think a power-plant could work for years with this CD. God bless you Mr. Coltrane! Submitted by Janos ujvari.j (Budapest, Hungary) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Sublime That we still talk of this masterpiece and debate its level of contraversy is a sign that this recording is very important.
Mr Coltrane was too spiritual to bring us the "Emperors new clothes". I admit that I listen to it infrequently, however, when I do I relish its truely uplifting sounds. I feel rejuvenated in a way no other recording of jazz has ever succeded in achieving (not even Miles or Cecil could move as much on this level).
John C gave us a glimpse of the otherworld with this recording one that makes us break out of our day to day inconsequent thoughts. WOW yes, it really is that uplifting folks. Submitted by a_lankester (Exeter, Devon, UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Not for Everyday, but Essential Nonetheless Ascension, and other albums like John Zorn's "Spy vs. Spy," are way too often overlooked, perhaps most likely because their intensity threatens the sensibilities of those who seek a more palatable listening experience. Not all music should go down like beer. Ascension is Jazz music's vintage cognac. Although I'm a fan, I admit I can't listen to this often. But I do enjoy savouring it when the mood is right. This is a landmark work by Jazz's greatest. Submitted by Sly (Milton, WI, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Ornette Coleman This Is Our Music CD (1961) (Import) United Kingdom
Ascension songs
$13.15 Recorded in New York, New York in 1961. Originally released on Atlantic. Includes liner notes by Ornette Coleman.
This landmark 1960 album from the Ornette Colemen Quartet, continued to hint at the dimension to which Coleman was headed. THIS IS OUR MUSIC featured a line-up of Coleman on sax, Don Cherry on trumpet, Charlie Haden on bass, and Ed Blackwell on drums.
With two landmark albums already under its belt, the Ornette Coleman Quartet spent nearly a year out of the studio before reconvening for This Is Our Music. This time, Billy Higgins is replaced on drums by Ed Blackwell, who has a similar knack for anticipating the ensemble's direction, and proves a more fiery presence on tracks like "Kaleidoscope" and "Folk Tale." The session is also notable for containing the only standard (or, for that matter, the only non-original) Coleman recorded during his tenure with Atlantic -- Gershwin's "Embraceable You," which is given a lyrical interpretation and even a rather old-time, sentimental intro (which may or may not be sarcastic, but really is pretty). In general, though, Coleman disapproved of giving up his own voice and viewed standards as concessions to popular taste; as the unapologetic title of the album makes clear, he wanted to be taken (or left) on his own terms. And that word "our" also makes clear just how important the concept of group improvisation was to Coleman's goals. Anyone can improvise whenever he feels like it, and the players share such empathy that each knows how to add to the feeling of ...

Ascension album
$12.15 Hailing from Portland, OR, Rum Rebellion is a peppery mix of Irish tunes, sea chanties, and oi!/punk rock, served up to you with a distinctive pirate twist. We are heavier than the Pogues, more aggressive than Flogging Molly, and more traditional than The Dropkick Murphys.Above all, it is the maritime influence in our songwriting that separates us from other bands in related genres. We promise a high-energy set full of up-tempo, swashbuckling singles that will get the audience moving on the dance floor and buying drinks at the bar.Rum Rebellion began as a group of friends who got together for casual nights of playing tunes together. Momentum built until Rum Rebellion officially formed as a band in March '05. At that point, we played totally acoustic sets of Irish traditional music. During the summer of '05, we added electric bass and a rock drummer to the band, and became what most of our fans know as Rum Rebellion today. We began writing our own tunes, recording, and playing gigs throughout the Pacific Northwest. Since January '06, we have recorded a four-song EP and have just released this 11-track CD - Cruisin' For A Boozin' Reviews:"The future of portland punk" - Willamette Weekly June 28th, 2006..PORTLAND MERCURY - AUGUST '06Ready to get rough and rowdy?
