Continuing her genre-bending tradition, Fourteen Days marks Laura Love's first release for Zoe Records. These 11 songs travel through the two years since her last record, documenting her life's occurrences in melody and rhythm. Based in Seattle, WA, Love was a witness to the World Trade Organization protests in November 1999. The events had a powerful effect on her, inspiring "In Seattle," a meandering piece that stresses the importance of the environment over the globalization of Nike and the like. Laura Nyro's death in 1997 also had an impact on Love. In tribute, she offers her take on "Stoned Soul Picnic." A little bit jazz, a little bit soul, it fits comfortably into Love's set list. Not only does she dance between styles from track to track, but even within the same song. Take "Way Off the Hook" -- it starts out on the prairie with a smooth acoustic guitar and soft harmonica. Without notice, it turns a sharp corner into the urban landscape of funk bass, saxophone, and accordion. Go figure. Somehow she pulls it off, tying in a bit of scat along the way. Then, into the jazz lounge we go on "Suddenly," before ending on the quiet notes of the traditional "Shenandoah." Although Love is a niche artist, Fourteen Days will surely please her loyal following while luring in new fans with its accessible uniqueness. ~ Kelly McCartney

Fourteen Days album
$12.85 Helvetica Bold is actually the name of a modern typeface, but as the notes explain, Laura Love means it to refer to the ancient Helvetii, a Celtic people in the time of Julius Caesar. Considering the bloody fate of the Celts at the hands of Caesar, this many not sound like an auspicious beginning. But we all know that Laura Love is glossing on her unique style ...
| | Laura Love Welcome To Pagan Place CD (2003)
Fourteen Days CD music
$14.95 There is no doubt that Laura Love is a smokin' bass player and a talented musician. Her records have always been mixed bags though. Welcome to Pagan Place may be her most consistent and successful recording to date, with a seamless weaving of folk, pop, jazz, a tad of rock and blues, and some shimmering reggae here and there. Compositionally Love is always engaging and often even remarkable. Lyrically, however -- and pardon what may appear to be cynicism -- she doesn't match her other talents. She doesn't pretend to be anybody other than what she is, a singer and songwriter, but this album offers a vision of her as a lot more and a little less. In her genre, she is peerless as a composer. Her deep understanding of rhythm, textures, and instrumental phrasing is singular in the "folk" world. And surrounding herself with musicians such as violinist Barbara Lamb and guitarist Rod Cook doesn't hurt either. Lyrically, ...

| | Gov't Mule By A Thread CD (2009)
Fourteen Days album
$11.89 BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. The band's keyboardist and rhythm guitarist, Danny Louis, is a shape-shifter, playing to whatever is needed in a given track. His manner of coloring sounds inside and around a particular tune's framework is a large part of ...
