A rewarding trio session from Bruce Barth, one of the most underrated post-bop pianists. Joined by bassist Ed Howard and drummer Billy Drummond, Barth splits the program evenly between standards and originals, the latter including a lovely pair of dedications: "Song for Alex" and "For Clara." Barth's affinity for Monk comes through on "Evidence" and an intriguing original called "The Way He Wore His Hat," intended as a Monk tribute but based on a motif from "They Can't Take That Away From Me." With "Lazy Bird," "Fascinating Rhythm," and the title track, Barth and company display their flair for rhythmic surprises. ~ David R. Adler

| | Bob Mover Music In The Key Of Clark CD (2002)
Don't Blame Me
$13.45 John Hicks' fourth CD in a series honoring pianists and composers who were from the greater Pittsburgh area salutes Sonny Clark, whose contributions have been somewhat overlooked since his premature death in 1963. Joined by bassist Dwayne Burno and drummer Cecil Brooks III, Hicks adds several originals -- which complement but don't attempt to mimic Clark's style -- in addition to his interpretations of Clark's compositions. He adds a lovely introductory original solo piano prelude to precede the easygoing waltz treatment of Clark's "My Conception," while his take of "Cable Car" gives it a Latin flavor. Hicks slows the tempo of Clark's "Minor Meeting" considerably and also winds the piece much tighter, giving it ...
| | Jane Monheit In The Sun CD (2002)
Don't Blame Me
$11.49 "Since You've Asked" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards For Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocals.
What is it about Jane Monheit that's sufficiently captured public attention to make her a star of the jazz world? Is it her photogenic mug and cheesecake album art, her close-enough-to-Krall style? Or is there just something about the way she tackles well-worn standards ("Some Other Time," "Cheek to Cheek"), more contemporary material ("Love Has No Pride," Judy Collins's "Since You've Asked"), and Brazilian tunes (by the likes of Ivan Lins, who makes a guest ...

| | Cabaret Voltaire Radiation CD (1998)
Don't Blame Me
$17.99 This collection of vintage industrial techno features one of the pioneers of the genre in several sessions recorded for the BBC between 1984 and '86. With their skeletal yet still rhythmically complex instrumentation, tracks like "You Like to Torment Me" and "Ruthless" have an angular, live-in-the-studio feel that contrasts with Cabaret Voltaire's contemporaneous recordings, with only "Sensoria" bearing much resemblance to its studio-created doppelganger. (A slashing run through "Sex Money Freaks" is considerably more disturbing than the comparatively placid original.) Recorded during the most artistically successful ...

$16.45 Imagine Jim Brickman without singers; George Winston without fame. This CD contains that same type of elegant piano music. It will transport you ('out to sea'), cause you to daydream ('chasing clouds'), and look inside ('the steps we take'). This is music to relax to, meditate to or rest to. Reminiscent of early 20th cenury ...
