Drive album
$8.75 Banjo master Bela Fleck takes a time-out of sorts from the dizzying NewGrass/Jazz-Country-Funk fusion for which he has become famous and returns to his bluegrass roots. THE BLUEGRASS SESSIONS: TALES FROM THE ACOUSTIC PLANET, VOLUME 2 runs the gamut from the humorous, old-time "Polka on the Banjo" (lead vocal by John Hartford) to the straight-ahead bluegrass of "Ode to Earl" (Scruggs, that is, the legendary banjoist). In the mysterious and beautiful "Katmandu," the music of the hills of Kentucky meets that of the hills of Asia. "Spanish Point" is the most Flecktones-sounding tune. This album, which contains fine contributions from Tony Rice, Vassar Clements, and Jerry Douglas, should appeal to the more adventurous bluegrass fan.

| | Bela Fleck Double Time CD (1984)
Drive CD music
$14.65 Double Time may be among Bela Fleck's least ambitious solo projects, although it proves an easily digestible introduction to his wildly eclectic banjo forays. After all, Fleck is a true pioneer of the five-string, an artist who has not only pushed the stylistic bounds of the instrument itself, but also established it as a stage centerpiece with his effortless rolls, subtle use of harmonics, and single-string runs. Suffice it to say, this 13-track compilation of acoustic duets features all of the above -- and in abundance. Fleck is the lone constant; the rotating cast he enlists is the variable that leads him into untrodden turf on each successive track. Perhaps the album's greatest strength is ...

| | Santana Moonflower CDs (1977) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Drive songs
$15.85 Santana, which was renowned for its concert work dating back to Woodstock, did not release a live album in the U.S. until this one, and it's only partially live, with studio tracks added, notably a cover of the Zombies' "She's Not There" (number 27) that became Santana's first Top 40 hit in five years. The usual comings and goings in band membership had taken place since last time; the track listing was a good mixture of the old -- "Black Magic Woman," "Soul Sacrifice" -- and the recent, and with the added radio play of a hit single, Moonflower went Top Ten and sold a million copies, the first new Santana album to do that since 1972 and the last until Supernatural in 1999. ~ William Ruhlmann

| | Johnny Coles Little Johnny C CD (1963) Remastered
Drive album
$8.45 Although this Blue Note session (reissued on CD in 1996) is led by trumpeter Johnny Coles, pianist Duke Pearson (who contributed the arrangements and five of the six compositions) really functioned as leader. The typically impressive Blue Note lineup (which includes Leo Wright on alto and flute, tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, ...
| | Capt John Handy Very Handy! CD (1968)
Drive CD music
$12.09 New Orleans altoist Captain John Handy was quite busy during March-May 1966, recording over five albums' worth of material and touring on the East Coast. This 1993 CD brings back one of the rarest of all the dates that trombonist Big Bill Bissonette recorded in the 1960s. Handy is teamed mostly with players from Bissonette's Easy Riders band of young revivalists: clarinetist Sammy Rimington, trumpeter ...

| | Josh Turner Long Black Train CD (2003)
Drive album
$10.25 Josh Turner seems to belong to a generation of country singers debuting in the late-1990s/early 2000s who were influenced by the middlebrow New Traditionalism of artists like Randy Travis and George Strait in the '80s. Accordingly, Turner's first offering, LONG BLACK TRAIN, strikes an uneasy bargain with Nashville commerciality, while making strides for the sound of "hard" country in the mainstream arena. It's no accident that some of the most successful ...
| | Dubstar Goodbye CD (1997) Import
Drive CD music
$10.49 Dubstar sounds like the name of a reggae act, but in fact, Goodbye offers very lush, atmospheric and British-sounding synth-pop and dance-pop that inspired quite a few comparisons to St. Etienne, as well as the Pet Shop Boys and New Order. The Newcastle, England trio had become popular in the U.K. in 1995, and it was in 1997 that this CD introduced Dubstar to American shores. ...
