"Baby, Now That I've Found You" won a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. Alison Krauss had been recording a decade before she gained stardom, but she became a star in a big way. Now That I've Found You: A Collection, a retrospective of her ten-year recording career for Rounder, became the surprise hit of 1995, rocketing to number two on the country charts and into the Top 15 on the pop charts, which is remarkable for a musician who had never captured the attention of a mass audience. It may have been a surprising success, but it also was deserved. Krauss was arguably the leading bluegrass musician of the late '80s and early '90s, pushing the music into new directions without losing sight of its roots. Now That I've Found You does a splendid job of chronicling her career, hitting all of the highlights and making a new listener eager to seek out her albums. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Since her Rounder debut in 1987, Alison Krauss has been praised by critics and country music fans alike. Revitalizing traditional styles of country music including bluegrass, the singer and fiddler is the focus of much public attention. Her unique, yet firmly-rooted approach to country music has won her several Grammys. Her 1995 release, NOW THAT I'VE FOUND YOU, showcases her ability to shine in a variety of settings. The title track and "Broadway" find Krauss in a more pop country environment; however even her pop music is unique in its smart harmonic structure, and her ability to avoid pat or stock poetic devices. On "Tonight I'll Be Lonely Too," Krauss and Union Station (Rolling Stone (4/20/95, p.80) - 4 Stars (out of 5) - "...A crystalline soprano, [Alison Krauss] sings with riveting emotion--and no melodrama whatsoever. This set--her six albums' best cuts plus collaborations with other new-grass luminaries--gives up delicate wonders..." Q (9/95, p.131) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...a leisurely stroll through her back catalogue, a catalogue so eclectic it contains startling re-workings of almost everything from the Beatles' `I Will' to The Foundations' `Baby, Now That I've Found You,' all done in a Smokey Mountain style with affection and much TLC..." Journal Of Country Music (Vol.18, No.1, pp.52-54) - "...The summation-to-date of Krauss's most accessible bluegrass sides....[has] taken rock & roll material by widely varied acts...and rather than play them as novelty items, Krauss wrings every bit of emotion out of them..." Don't go home without her I bought this CD for the great performance of the song When You Say Nothing at All, which remains my favorite of her songs. Her singing is so natural yet perfect and moving, has a human frailty, and the child in the grown woman quality yet is astonishingly musically precise. I started my Krauss collection with this CD, and every song on this one is of high quality, mostly ballads with a bit of bluegrass and a couple gospel flavored tunes. Her perfectionism as a musician just takes these songs to a deeper level where you notice every little pick of the guitar string and quiver of her voice until you're completely entranced. Don't go home without her, and you'll fall in love as I have with her voice and her songs. The genre doesn't matter, I'm not a bluegrass fan, yet I find her very moving singing to be one of the best ever in any genre. Submitted by Andrew M. (Santa Rosa, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
