For an album assembled from such far-ranging projects, this has a delightful cohesion. These twenty tracks have appeared on compilations, Japanese releases (Brave Combo have several Japan-only recordings out), and elsewhere, while some were previously unissued. The musical rainbow here includes cha-chas, waltzes, Japanese Ondo music, Tex-Mex and more. Originals such as "Three Ducks Cha Cha" mingle easily with such reinterpretations as their Far-Eastern "Volare" and their Latin-inflected "Little Bit Of Soul."
"Always Vienna," written by band leader Carl Finch and Steve Carter (who also recorded it with his band, Little Jack Melody & His Young Turks), is gorgeous, cinematic, and hauntingly evocative. MOOD SWING MUSIC demonstrates everything that is so compelling about this long running Texas-based ensemble. They're consummate players and their confident chops lead them to warm and subtle invention--never to grandstanding. This album is a great place to start with Brave Combo.
