This 1984 Rounder reissue of Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown's 1950s Peacock sides is a classic dose of Brown in his prime, and a blueprint for the fiery guitar style that would influence such fellow Texas axe-slingers as Albert Collins and Johnny "Guitar" Watson. Even on these early dates, Brown's fluid, irrepressible six-string mastery and his penchant for genre blending--bridging rock & roll, jump blues, swing, and down-home gutbucket wailing--are in ample evidence.
Diverse session musicians provide the driving rhythm back-up, striding piano and punchy horns, but it's Brown's guitar work, throaty, bluesy singing and impressive multi-instrumentalism-he's also featured on harmonica on "Gate's Salty Blues" and violin on "Just Before Dawn"--that takes center stage. Whether on the steamy slow blues of "For Now So Long," the walking groove of "Ain't That Dandy," or the scintillating rock-swing rave-up of "Okie Dokie Stomp," where Brown's guitar weaves wild, intricate webs around a horn-punctuated rhythm, this is no-nonsense, get-up-and-dance good time music of the highest order. THE ORIGINAL PEACOCK RECORDINGS is among the essential discs in this Texas legend's extensive catalogue.
Recorded in Houston, Texas between 1952 & 1959. Includes liner notes by Dick Shurman.
Personnel includes: Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown (vocals, guitar, violin, harmonica); Nathaniel Douglas (guitar); Johnny Parker (alto saxophone); Bill Harvey (tenor saxophone); Fred Ford, Allen Clarke (baritone saxophone); Henry Boozier (trumpet); Jimmy McCracklin, Paul Monday, Carl Owens (piano); Joe Toussaint, Ray Johnson, Carl Lott (bass); San Frisco Jeff, Jual Curtis, Duke Barker, Emile Russell (drums).

Original Peacock Recordings CD music
$7.79 This set includes a 14-page booklet with a discography, black and white photogrpaphs, background information about the sessions by Steve Franz and a biographical essay by Robert Palmer.
Rhino's superlative Elmore James retrospective is essential, not only because it brings together 21 of the artist's finest sides, but because it collects those tracks from various periods (1951-1969) and labels (Trumpet, Chess, Flair, Fire, Chief, and Flashback). James's erratic recording history makes ...

Original Peacock Recordings album
$16.65 The historic live Town Hall sessions by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker from 1945 have been discovered on an acetate pressing, and are transferred with digital enhancement to CD. Why this concert was not issued initially is understandable, but Ira Gitler's informative and insightful liner notes suggest they likely were misplaced. What Gitler's essential writing also reveals is that these dates were approximate by only weeks to the original studio recordings of these classics, and there was ...

| | Joan Of Arc In Rape Fantasy And Terror Sex We Trust CD (2003)
Original Peacock Recordings album
$11.09 The brothers Kinsella move on with their dark, fragmented indie stylings found on So Much Staying Alive and Lovelessness for the strangely beautiful In Rape Fantasy and Terror Sex We Trust. This album was recorded simultaneously with Joan of Arc's fourth effort and was initially planned to be a part of it; however, these particular tracks took on a different tone. Joan of Arc are much more abstract and bleak on In Rape Fantasy and Terror Sex We Trust. As if the title wasn't suggestive enough, the Chicago collective strips the heat and gunfire prominent in early Bauhaus singles and condenses it into a grating reel of chimes, synthesizers, and percussion. In a way, Joan of Arc create their own stage show of things breaking and converging, but never too much to sonically make sense. Guitar riffs coil, drums ride ...
