Beau Jocque & The Zydeco Hi-Rollers: Beau Jocque (vocals, accordion), Ray Johnson (guitar, background vocals), Joseph "Cookie" Chavis (guitar), Chuck Bush (bass, background vocals), Steve "Skeeta" Charlot (drums, background vocals), Wilfred "Caveman" Pierre (rubboard).
Recorded live at Harry's Lounge, Breaux Bridge, Louisiana and Slim's Y-Ki-Ki Lounge, Opelousas, Louisiana on September 23-24, 1994. Includes liner notes by Ben Sandmel.
Git It, Beau Jocque! is the first major live release from the new era zydeco legend, released at the peak of his career in 1995. The joint is thoroughly jumpin' as the Zydeco Hi-Rollers plunge from dance to dance. The songs are largely originals, with a few exceptions sprinkled here and there. The band opens with Boozoo Chavis' "Motor Dude Special," then goes into the title track and the lengthy "Beau Jocque Boogie." "Sack O' Woe" is a little more blues-based, and the "Beau Jocque Run" picks up the tempo quite a bit. Reminding the listener that it's a live album, the band turns the recitation of the night's winning raffle ticket number into a short-lived zydeco tour-de-force in "0394413," and, after the only piece sung fully in French, moves into an old Lightnin' Hopkins number. A two-step later, Beau's singing "Happy Birthday" in his own way, followed by another reminder of the live status as he harangues someone whose car is blocking the club driveway. A Neville Brothers piece brings in a bit of the exotic soul, and the album closes with "Give Him Cornbread," which soon became a decent-sized hit for Jocque. Every Beau Jocque album has some fire in it, and this one's no exception. Pick Up on This might be the first recommendation to new listeners, but this one's excellent, too, and has a couple of interesting little rarities for hardcore fans and collectors. ~ Adam Greenberg

Git It, Beau Jocque! CD music
$9.65 (MP3 Available for Download) Basie-style blues and swing are the foundation of this amiable live set from 1995. This is no surprise, given Al Grey's and Harry "Sweets" Edison's work with the Count -- Grey most notably from 1957-1961 and Edison from 1938-1950. From that base, though, the two take divergent paths here. Renowned though he is for his brassy bravado and skill with the plunger mute, Grey seems too firmly planted in an earlier era, so much so that his playing can come across as nostalgic routines. It is actually elder statesman Edison (at 79, Grey's senior by almost a decade), who -- still working within the swing ethic -- creates some fresh sparks. His warm and slippery tone, technical finesse, and improvisational skills yield a choice handful of timeless statements. Rounding out the front line, Jerome Richardson plays ...

$11.49 CARL SLACK"TURNING THE WORM"CARL SLACK MUSICBY PETER "BLEWZZMAN" LAURO, COPYRIGHT 2007Intriguing, is probably the best word to describe the effect that "TURNING THE WORM" had on me. Generally, non traditional styles of blues such as this simply don't excite me. Yet, something about this disc has me uncharacteristically impressed. "TURNING THE WORM" consists of nine CARL SLACK originals that combine a perfect blend of folk, country, southern rock and blues. Mastering those styles not only shows a musicians versatility, but it opens up a lot of doors - possibly providing a bit of job security as well. Be it a 'Coffee House', a 'Juke Joint' or a 'Honky Tonk' - put CARL SLACK on the stage and a good time will be had by all. None were given, but if I had to guess as to who some of CARL'S inspirations were, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Jimmy Buffet and Delbert McClinton are just a few of the names that would come to my mind. Joining CARL SLACK on vocals, acoustic, electric and slide guitars, harmonica and percussion are: MIKE LOVELADY on drums; DAVE ROMERO on bass and background vocals; CHAD LITTLE on guitar and background vocals; JARVIS HOLLOWAY on fiddle. On "PONYBOY", the opening track, it took me hearing him sing all of the first sentence to fall in love with this young man's voice. Then I heard his harp playing and immediately knew the rest of this disc was going to be an absolute treat. And indeed it was."ANOTHER HOMESICK TUNE" features great fiddlin' by Jarvis. This southern rock blues track would feel right at home on just about ...
