After one album for Mercury, 1978's AT YANKEE STADIUM, NRBQ was again on their own with their Rounder-affiliated Red Rooster label. Standing in glorious contrast to its predecessor, the two albums form a complete a picture of the band, at this point already well into their tenth year. Where YANKEE STADIUM is a sleek and shiny sports car, KICK ME HARD lurches forward in self-propelled fits and starts. It's warm, quirky and completely believable. Bursts of humor make everything friendly and humane, never simply comic. Recorded in various settings, it circles and moves like a carousel, amounting to a multifaceted portrait of this incredibly diverse band. THE DELUXE EDITION appellation was added when KICK ME HARD was issued on CD and makes reference to the hefty bonus of eight additional tracks.

| | John Prine Fair & Square CD (2005) Bonus Tracks
Kick Me Hard CD music
$13.35 FAIR & SQUARE's release was highly anticipated by John Prine fans, as the veteran singer/songwriter hadn't recorded an album of new songs in 10 years (the preceding IN SPITE OF OURSELVES was mostly cover tunes). Happily for both Prine and his contingent, FAIR & SQUARE represents that most coveted of phenomena, the Return to Form. Though 1995's LOST DOGS & MIXED BLESSINGS was not without its virtues, some tracks were ...

| | Oasis Be Here Now CD (1997)
Kick Me Hard songs
$18.59 "All Around The World" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video.
Shamelessly enamored of The Beatles, Oasis uses BE HERE NOW to serve up another heaping platter of larger-than-life rock and roll garnished with Fab Fourisms. Noel Gallagher's ambitious songwriting and production (which, not coincidentally, was done at Abbey Road) result in an average song length of almost six minutes and the full, gnarly guitar sound that's become Oasis' trademark. "Magic Pie" and "All Around The World" incorporate brassy orchestration reminiscent of "Let It Be," while the former's name seems a less-than-subtle nod to Macca's FLAMING PIE album released a few months prior.
Aside from the band's constant worship at the Beatles shrine, Gallagher occasionally draws from other sources, sharply addressing ...

| | Tesla Forever More CD (2008) (Import) Japan
Kick Me Hard songs
$43.35 Four years following the band's last studio effort (2004's INTO THE NOW), Tesla step up to prove themselves beyond the cliche reformation trend that found many late-80s hard rock and metal acts cashing in on fan nostalgia. FOREVER MORE marks Tesla's first full-length with new guitarist Dave Rude (who replaced founding member Tommy Skeoch) and the return of producer/collaborator Terry Thomas. This collection of inspired, quickly-written new songs melds the downtuned, contemporary leanings of INTO THE NOW with the band's now-classic sound that made their 1986 debut (MECHANICAL RESONANCE) a desert island disc.
There was never much separating Tesla from the rest of the melodic metallists that ruled MTV and radio during the late '80s -- from a musical standpoint. Although to their credit, Tesla never dolled themselves up in make-up and mile-high hair, as these gentlemen always favored shirts and jeans over spandex. But musically, they certainly fit in with the aforementioned genre. By the time of their eighth studio ...
