(1 Customer Review)
In the local language of southern Louisiana, Coteau means higher ground or ridge; in this case, it also means a band that combined the Allman Brothers with Cajun music in their presentation. While other bands that combined the sensibilities of rock with their local music have become successful -- witness Los Lobos, among others -- this band never did hit it. Michael Doucet has gone on to tremendous success with his more traditional band Beausoleil, and several other members continued as professional musicians, but the band was lost for whatever reasons until now. Listen to their treatments of some of the traditional songs later spotlighted through Beausoleil's work. This highly infectious melding of traditional Cajun music with southern rock & roll is one of the musical highlights of 1997. ~ Bob Gottlieb

| | Brian Lynch Fuchsia/Red CD (2003)
Highly Seasoned Cajun Music album
$13.25 Trumpeter Brian Lynch is famous for playing high-quality hard bop, formerly with the last version of Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers in addition to the Phil Woods Quintet and his own combo dates. FUCHSIA/RED is definitely a change of pace because the music mostly falls into the area of fusion. With Brad Turner dominating the ensembles on electric keyboards, Lynch sounds surprisingly comfortable in this setting, performing his originals plus a song by Björk. Some of the music is reminiscent of Freddie Hubbard's better funk projects, while other selections are closer to prime fusion of the late '60s/early '70s, a bit like Miles Davis' groups. "Magenta's Waltz" is a little more mainstream but otherwise this is a date that is more highly recommended to fans of fusion than to Lynch's usual audience.
Few performers in the world of jazz music have such a rich and varied career palette as trumpeter Brian Lynch. Born September 12, 1956 in Urbana, Illinois, Brian grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and had his initial playing experiences there with such local luminaries as pianist Buddy Montgomery and organist Melvin Rhyne, while earning a degree from the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music. Briefly moving to San Diego in 1980-81, he gained further valuable experience in the group of master altoist Charles McPherson.Brian moved to New York in late 1981 and rapidly made inroads on the New York music scene and the international music world. One of his first major gigs was with the Horace Silver Quintet (1982-1985), as well as garnering big band experience with the Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra (1982-1988). At the same time, Brian was playing and recording on the Latin music scene with such renowned salsa artists as Angel Canales and the great cantante Hector La Voe (1983-87). Brian, after many record dates as a sidemen, recorded his first album as a leader, Peer Pressure on the Criss Cross label in 1986.The late '80s found Brian making important and enduring associations with two giants of music. In 1987, he began playing ...
