| | Raffi More Singable Songs CD Raffi Discography of CDs
Sometimes known as the Bruce Springsteen for the younger set, Egyptian-born, Canadian-based singer-songwriter Raffi teamed up with veteran producer Daniel Lanois for 1998's MORE SINGABLE SONGS. While Raffi lists Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell as his biggest influences, recent years have seen him go global.
On MORE SINGABLE SONGS he incorporates folk, reggae, ragtime, gospel, jazz, country and even calypso into his oeuvre. And while his musical influences--and his popularity--now reach throughout the world, there is nothing the least bit stuffy about him. Just check out his sweet vocal delivery on "Six Little Ducks," a surefire children's favorite. And one cannot overlook his trademark gentle humor on MORE SINGABLE SONGS with songs such as "If I Had a Dinosaur" and the whimsical "Oh Me, Oh My," in which he concludes "You don't need a lumberjack to pour your milk!" MORE SINGABLE SONGS is an easy listen, too, for parents raised on the folk music of the '60s and '70s, and even includes an excellent version of the folk classic "New River Train." $12.19 One of Raffi's best selling recordings, SINGABLE SONGS FOR THE VERY YOUNG features 19 short, catchy tunes sung by one of world's best-known singers of children's songs. SINGABLE SONGS FOR THE VERY YOUNG includes instructive songs such as "Brush Your Teeth" and "Going to the Zoo," as well as a number of pop compositions, like "Down By the Bay" and "Aikendrum," that parents can enjoy too. | | Raffi Let's Play CD (2002)
More Singable Songs album
$12.25 Children's music superstar Raffi maintains his stellar standards on this charming 16-song album. Don't be fooled by the title, which is something of a misnomer: this isn't all play music. In fact, it covers a range of moods and subjects, not to mention genres.
The bearded Pied Piper from Canada weaves together a selection of familiar covers and imaginative originals. There's a Celtic folk version of the Beatles' "Yellow Submarine," a delicate piano treatment of "Eensy Weensy Spider" (with an additional, Raffi-penned verse), and, in an interesting choice, an airy rendition of "What a Wonderful World." Among the original numbers, "Raining Like Magic" is sea-breeze calypso, "If You're Happy and You Know It" skips along on Chico Marx-style piano, and "It Takes a Village" is bright reggae with an important message. Reaching farther around the globe, "Tsetang Gangla (On the Playground)" is an adaptation of a traditional Tibetan children's song and the dreamy "May There Always Be Sunshine" alternates between English and Russian. Of special note are "Jane Jane," a bouncy tribute to Dr. Jane Goodall, who studied the chimps of Tanzania for 40 years, and the swingy title track with its nod to legendary jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. Instructive, tender, joyful, and thoughtful, this is ...

| | Sonics Boom CD (1966)
More Singable Songs music CDs
$12.39 While it might not be the mainline shot of rock & roll that was their debut, the Sonic's second studio full-length, released in 1966, is a stellar album in its own right. BOOM, which alludes to both the band's regional origins and the inspiration for their name (the Pacific Northwest being a fabled testing ground for Boeing jets), contains raw garage-rock originals such as "Cinderella" and "The Hustler"; punked up versions of "Jenny Jenny Jenny" and "Don't You Just Know It"; and a howling, scorched-earth take on the definitive anthem for rock-&-roll delinquency "Louie Louie." The Sonics embodied everything rock & roll was and is still about: taking ...

| | Zao Fear Is What Keeps Us Here CD (2006)
More Singable Songs songs
$12.39 Dogged by constant musician turnover, Zao stumbled and spluttered throughout the early 2000s, just as the metallic hardcore style they helped define was enjoying its greatest commercial acceptance via contemporaries and inspired followers such as Shadows Fall, Unearth, and Killswitch Engage. 2004's Legendary collection appeared to symbolize the nail on their collective coffin, especially as it followed the definitive departure of founding drummer and guiding force Jesse Smith; but long-tenured members Daniel Weyandt (vocals) and Scott Mellinger (guitars), were soon lured to carry on by a new contract with leading independent Ferret Records, hiring a new rhythm section and frightening many of their devout Christian followers with the following year's mixed-review concept album, The Funeral of God. Then, for its 2006 follow-up, The Fear Is What Keeps Us Here, the band teamed up with renowned analog-only producer Steve Albini, and once again toned down (while not necessarily disowning) their Christian past, to come up with an album (their tenth!) representing the very extreme of what one might still like to categorize as metalcore. True to Zao's pioneering standards, uncompromising new tracks like "Kingdom of Thieves," "There's No Such Thing as ...
