Sometimes known as the Bruce Springsteen for the younger set, Egyptian-born, Canadian-based singer-songwriter Raffi teamed up with veteran producer Daniel Lanois for 1998's MORE SINGABLE SONGS. While Raffi lists Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell as his biggest influences, recent years have seen him go global.
On MORE SINGABLE SONGS he incorporates folk, reggae, ragtime, gospel, jazz, country and even calypso into his oeuvre. And while his musical influences--and his popularity--now reach throughout the world, there is nothing the least bit stuffy about him. Just check out his sweet vocal delivery on "Six Little Ducks," a surefire children's favorite. And one cannot overlook his trademark gentle humor on MORE SINGABLE SONGS with songs such as "If I Had a Dinosaur" and the whimsical "Oh Me, Oh My," in which he concludes "You don't need a lumberjack to pour your milk!" MORE SINGABLE SONGS is an easy listen, too, for parents raised on the folk music of the '60s and '70s, and even includes an excellent version of the folk classic "New River Train." Children's music superstar Raffi maintains his stellar standards on this charming 16-song album. Don't be fooled by the title, which is something of a misnomer: this isn't all play music. In fact, it covers a range of moods and subjects, not to mention genres.
The bearded Pied Piper from Canada weaves together a selection of familiar covers and imaginative originals. There's a Celtic folk version of the Beatles' "Yellow Submarine," a delicate piano treatment of "Eensy Weensy Spider" (with an additional, Raffi-penned verse), and, in an interesting choice, an airy rendition of "What a Wonderful World." Among the original numbers, "Raining Like Magic" is sea-breeze calypso, "If You're Happy and You Know It" skips along on Chico Marx-style piano, and "It Takes a Village" is bright reggae with an important message. Reaching farther around the globe, "Tsetang Gangla (On the Playground)" is an adaptation of a traditional Tibetan children's song and the dreamy "May There Always Be Sunshine" alternates between English and Russian. Dogged by constant musician turnover, Zao stumbled and spluttered throughout the early 2000s, just as the metallic hardcore style they helped define was enjoying its greatest commercial acceptance via contemporaries and inspired followers such as Shadows Fall, Unearth, and Killswitch Engage. 2004's Legendary collection appeared to symbolize the nail on their collective coffin, especially as it followed the definitive departure of founding drummer and guiding force Jesse Smith; but long-tenured members Daniel Weyandt (vocals) and Scott Mellinger (guitars), were soon lured to carry on by a new contract with leading independent Ferret Records, hiring a new rhythm section and frightening many of their devout Christian followers with the following year's mixed-review concept album, The Funeral of God.
