(3 Customer Reviews)
From probably the world's most popular whale, this record is a delight. For ages three to eight. ~ Bob Hinkle Canadian children's performer Raffi brings a gentle, tuneful, and--most importantly--relaxed air to his songs. BABY BELUGA features four Raffi-penned originals, including the terrific title track, which begins with real whale sounds taken from underwater recordings. "Baby Beluga" is one of Raffi's best-known tunes and serves as the centerpiece of his 1984 video, A YOUNG CHILDREN'S CONCERT WITH RAFFI. In addition to the Raffi compositions, there are a number of popular, traditional songs, such as "This Old Man," "Kumbaya," and "Oats and Beans and Barley," on BABY BELUGA. All of the tracks on this recording are performed with his trademark affability. Raffi and his music exude an undeniable sweetness--think Andy Kaufman without the lingering menace. Those with kids will attest to the profound relief experienced when it's Raffi on the sound system of an extended car journey, rather than one of the numerous examples of cloying children's music that dominates the market. $10.49 With the release of Robert Altman's M*A*S*H in 1970, a new form of comedy was born, one that would help to forever change the face of cinema. Altman's audacious film reflected the American counterculture's growing distrust of religion and government in the late 1960s and early 1970s, resulting in one of the biggest box office smashes of its time. Introducing the techniques he would employ throughout his storied career--overlapping dialogue, a constantly moving camera with a heavy amount of zooming, and a bold combination of frank subject matter with cynical humor--Altman immediately vaulted himself to Hollywood's upper ranks. Based on the novel by Richard ...

Layng Martine III is best-known for his engineering and mixing work with bassist/producer Bill Laswell, so it comes as little surprise that The Bellwether Project, a collaboration with Widespread Panic bassist David Schools and a host of guest musicians, features a similar fusionary sound. It also comes as little surprise that, in addition to various studio aces and guitarist Pete Droge, the ensemble cast includes longtime Laswell associates like turntablist DXT and singer/songwriter Lori Carson. And while Martine is not quite on his mentor's level as far as attracting world class musical talent, it's clear that he is undoubtedly a product of Laswell's ...
