Canadian children's performer Raffi brings a gentle, tuneful, and--most importantly--relaxed air to his songs. BABY BELUGA features four Raffi-penned originals, including the terrific title track, which begins with real whale sounds taken from underwater recordings. "Baby Beluga" is one of Raffi's best-known tunes and serves as the centerpiece of his 1984 video, A YOUNG CHILDREN'S CONCERT WITH RAFFI.
In addition to the Raffi compositions, there are a number of popular, traditional songs, such as "This Old Man," "Kumbaya," and "Oats and Beans and Barley," on BABY BELUGA. All of the tracks on this recording are performed with his trademark affability. Raffi and his music exude an undeniable sweetness--think Andy Kaufman without the lingering menace. Those with kids will attest to the profound relief experienced when it's Raffi on the sound system of an extended car journey, rather than one of the numerous examples of cloying children's music that dominates the market. Baby Beluga CD music
$10.29 With the release of Robert Altman's M*A*S*H in 1970, a new form of comedy was born, one that would help to forever change the face of cinema. Altman's audacious film reflected the American counterculture's growing distrust of religion and government in the late 1960s and early 1970s, resulting in one of the biggest box office smashes of its time. Introducing the techniques he would employ throughout his storied career--overlapping dialogue, a constantly moving camera with a heavy amount of zooming, and a bold combination of frank subject matter with cynical humor--Altman immediately vaulted himself to Hollywood's upper ranks. Based on the novel by Richard Hooker, M*A*S*H follows a ...
| | Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Stars Dizzy's 80th Birthday Party CD (1997)
Baby Beluga music CDs
$14.59 The Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Stars: Andres Boiarsky (vocals, tenor saxophone); Jon Faddis (vocals, trumpet); Cyrus Chestnut (vocals, piano); John Lee (vocals, bass); Ignacio Berroa (vocals, drums); Antonio Hart (alto saxophone); Gabriel Machado (congas); Duduka Da Fonesca (percussion).
To celebrate the late trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie's 80th birthday (he had made it to 75), trumpeter Jon Faddis heads a tribute to Gillespie. Faddis, Dizzy's greatest protégé, can sound just like Gillespie (no mean feat), but actually has a much wider range and can play stratospheric high notes perfectly in tune. Joined by either altoist Antonio Hart or the little-known but talented tenorman Andres Boiarsky, pianist Cyrus Chestnut, bassist John Lee, drummer Ignacio Berroa and occasionally Duduka Da Fonesca and Gabriel Machado on percussion, Faddis performs 11 songs either composed or co-written by Gillespie, plus two other pieces that Dizzy recorded (including "Blues from Gillespiana"). The arrangements are often close to the ones that Gillespie used, but are full of life and never sound like stale re-creations. Jon Faddis is such an exciting and enthusiastic player that this 1997 performance stands apart from Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Stars' recordings. Never mind that the only Gillespie alumni on the recording are Faddis, Chestnut, ...
| | Slang Bellwether Project CD (2001)
Baby Beluga songs
$11.49 Layng Martine III is best-known for his engineering and mixing work with bassist/producer Bill Laswell, so it comes as little surprise that The Bellwether Project, a collaboration with Widespread Panic bassist David Schools and a host of guest musicians, features a similar fusionary sound. It also comes as little surprise that, in addition to various studio aces and guitarist Pete Droge, the ensemble cast includes longtime Laswell associates like turntablist DXT and singer/songwriter Lori Carson. And while Martine is not quite on his mentor's level as far as attracting world class musical talent, it's clear that he is undoubtedly a product of Laswell's influence. Take the opening "Field Guide to Snapping," for instance: Over a funky, laid-back hip-hop groove driven by Schools' subdued bassline, Martine layers ambient samples, synth squiggles and DXT's syncopated scratching to create a textured bit of luscious space-funk straight outta the master's textbook. On "Bell-O-Matic," an off-kilter drumbeat and haunting sampled voices provide the backdrop for Droge's echoed blues guitar riffs, as Carson's folksy vocals provide a catchy hook for listeners to grab hold of. And "North Fork Two-Step" is just pure, insane genius, with a countrified rock riff that wouldn't sound out of ...
