| | America's Newest Praise & Worship Favorites Vol. 1 CD
America's Newest Praise & Worship Favorites, Vol. 1 is a collection of contemporary Christian tunes that have found their way into church services as an enjoyable supplement to traditional hymns. The songs on this collection were produced and arranged by Dave Williamson for choir and a supporting CCM band, and so while the performers here don't really stand out individually, the music is solidly done. All told, there are a generous 17 tracks present, and Vol. 2 offers more of the same quality. ~ Steve Huey
Performed by The New Song Christian Fellowhip Singers.

$7.99 It's no mystery why Disneyland adopted the Mike Curb Congregation's rendition of "It's a Small World" as the official version of its theme song -- the group's clean-cut optimism and genteel style is a ringer for the pop choruses of the '60s, and bears more than a passing resemblance to their Osmond Family labelmates. The group scored most of their hits while backing other MGM artists such as Little Jimmy Osmond and Sammy Davis, Jr., but had one major hit on their own with "Burning Bridges" from the Clint Eastwood film soundtrack Kelly's Heroes. Greatest Hits contains the original recordings of every Mike Curb Congregation song that registered on the pop and adult contemporary singles ...
| | Get Down Tonight: The Disco Explosion CDs (2004) Digipak
America's Newest Praise & Worship Favorites Vol. 1 songs
$41.09 The three-disc box set Get Down Tonight: The Disco Explosion was released just after PBS premiered the program of the same name, which featured new performances -- from Anita Ward, Thelma Houston, A Taste of Honey, KC & the Sunshine Band, and several others -- with archival footage from the disco era. Content-wise, the box doesn't do much to separate itself from the average disco compilation series, leaning heavily on mainstream hits. Each of these 58 songs reached the pop chart, remarkable for a movement with most of its roots planted in clubs that were only a little like Studio 54, populated by marginalized blacks, Latinos, and gays -- a subculture avoided or barely acknowledged by many Saturday Night Fever fans. (The difference is also in the stark contrast between excluded people who were inclusive and included people who were exclusive.) Most of the songs here have appeared on scores of other disco compilations, but those discs are prone to flimsy packaging and poor sound. Distributed ...

They were known as the Soul Stirrers when they did the 1951-1957 recordings on this three-CD, 84-song collection. It's billed to Sam Cooke with the Soul Stirrers, though, as it's the ultimate collection of sides he recorded as a member of the group for Specialty Records, along with seven tentative secular pop/rock sides he did for the label as a solo singer in 1956. ...

| | Glen Campbell Show Me Your Way CD (1991)
America's Newest Praise & Worship Favorites Vol. 1 album
$10.25 Released in 1991, Show Me Your Way is a contemporary Christian album, and it bears many of the hallmarks of the genre of that time: crystal-clear production, an over-reliance on synthesizers, arrangements that are at once Spartan and bombastic, particularly when the choirs come in for color. It's the production that weighs this down, making all ten songs sound a little too similar, making them all blend together, and that's too bad, because if it's taken as individual moments, there are some good tracks here. Those that are of most interest to long-term Glen Campbell fans are the two Jimmy Webb songs, "Where I Am Going" and "The Four Horsemen," both good compositions whose idiosyncrasies seem a little out of place among the very straightforward material on the rest of the record. Not that this straightforward material is necessarily bad -- in fact, Geoff Thurman and Jamie Page's "The Wayward Son" is the best thing here, since the tune and the production are in harmony with each other; Steve Hardin's "A Few ...
