(6 Customer Reviews)
Alkaline Trio added some extra gloom to pop-punk with their almost perfect debut, Goddamnit! Spinning tales of doomed romance, this Chicago three-piece hit too close to home with its stories of obsessive crushes, messy breakups, and alcoholism. Lyrically, Maybe I'll Catch Fire follows in the footsteps of Goddamnit!, while staying true to the elaborate but emotional tone of aggressive pop-punk. Not as essential as the Trio's previous efforts, but it would be difficult for any band to follow up an album like Goddamnit! ~ Mike DaRonco

| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Maybe I'll Catch Fire
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer ...
| | Alkaline Trio Good Mourning CD (2003)
Maybe I'll Catch Fire
$11.29 Though most of the songs on the Alkaline Trio's GOOD MOURNING don't seem to be literally about death, titles like "Fatally Yours" and "All On Black" (not to mention the pictures of crosses and white lilies that adorn the disc's packaging) suggest a rather fatalistic listening experience. In this case, ...
| | Alkaline Trio Crimson CD (2005) Enhanced CD
Maybe I'll Catch Fire
$11.79 The enhanced portion of this release contains "making of" video.
The bowler-hatted, three-piece-suit-wearing figure on the cover of Alkaline Trio's CRIMSON seems emblematic. The edgy, emo-tinged pop-punk group is dressed up a bit here, sporting a wherewithal and sophistication that distinguishes this 2005 release from its previous efforts. In part, this is thanks to producer Jerry Finn (of Green Day and Blink 182 fame), who gives the album an impeccable razor-like sheen, but the clincher on CRIMSON is the quality of the tunes.
Nearly every cut here teems ...

| | Wizzard Singles A's & B'S CD (2002) (Import) Germany
Maybe I'll Catch Fire
$15.75 This is the German import edition of Wizzard's SINGLES A'S & B'S featuring 18 tracks.
Although they recorded a couple of albums, Wizzard was at its best as a singles outfit, because Roy Wood's pop songwriting chops truly shined when confronting the challenges of the 45-rpm format. As the hits collected on Singles: A's & B's reveal, Wizzard was an excellent outlet for Wood's ability to combine retro-rock elements borrowed from a variety of pop sources with a driving glam rock edge: "Ball Park Incident" sounds like Jerry Lee Lewis jamming with the Spiders from Mars and "Angel Fingers" is a delightfully bombastic ballad that layers multiple tiers of vocals, brass, and percussion to create a perfect homage to Phil Spector's Wall of Sound production style. Singles: A's & B's also does Roy Wood fans a favor by collecting mostly non-album B-sides together. These flip sides are mostly instrumental in nature, and mix Wood's gift for eccentric orchestrations ...

There are essentially two schools of thought when it comes to world music: the purists who believe that ancient musical traditions must remain undiluted to survive, and the fusionists who believe that it is the ability of artists to adapt their cultural traditions to modern tastes that will allow them to survive. Though often blasted by traditionalists for his trademark world music collusions, bassist/producer Bill Laswell has done a remarkable job of straddling the lines dividing these two camps, working with world music favorites like the Master Musicians of Jajouka, Simon Shaheen, and Foday Muso Suso to concoct heady stylistic brews that update their respective traditions for 21st century audiences. Laswell's latest discovery is 27-year-old Ejigayehu "Gigi" Shibabaw, a stunning Ethiopian singer whose self-titled debut establishes her as one of Africa's most accomplished young artists. Her mellifluous vocals are backed by an impressive multicultural ...

Ry Cooder, the guitarist/composer/arranger behind the Buena Vista Social Club and numerous film scores (JOHNNY HANDSOME, PARIS, TEXAS), is back with a suave collection of tunes infused with more of the sinuous rhythms from Cuba. Just as we are comfortably settling into the seductive feel set up on the opening track, "Drume Negrita," enter Mr. Cooder's languorous pedal steel and we are transported beyond the ...
