Pianist Chick Corea in 1996 gathered together some notable young all-stars (tenor-saxophonist Joshua Redman, trumpeter Wallace Roney, altoist Kenny Garrett, bassist Christian McBride, plus veteran drummer Roy Haynes) for explorations of tunes by the innovative pianist Bud Powell. Although "Bouncin' With Bud," "Tempus Fugit" and "Celia" have been occasionally recorded by others, most of the complex songs (including "Mediocre," "Dusk In Sandi," "Oblivion" and "Glass Enclosure") have rarely been played in recent decades. Rather than play revivalist bebop, Corea and his associates (after authentically stating the melody) perform modern post bop improvisations in their own styles, so much of the music is way beyond bop. In addition to nine Powell songs, Corea contributed a song rightfully titled "Bud Powell." All of the talented musicians have a fair amount of solo space and sound consistently inspired, making this a very successful and easily recommended project. ~ Scott Yanow This is a truly unique disc in the canon of legendary pianist Chick Corea. REMEMBERING BUD POWELL is not the run-of-the-mill tribute album where less than memorable performances of rehashed standards constitute an homage to Bird, Dizzy or Miles. This is a project of considerable forethought and dedication. Corea has assembled a stunning group of performers including saxophonists Kenny Garrett and Joshua Redman, trumpeter Wallace Roney, bass phenom Christian McBride and bebop pioneer Roy Haynes on drums. Together they form a powerful unit that masterfully executes a rousing commendation of the musical brilliance of the great bop pianist. Corea's rhythmic piano style lends itself well to Powell's complex compositions like the swinging opener "Bouncin' With Bud." Haynes punches and jabs the horn line on a frantically exciting reading of "Willow Grove." Corea's reflective solo intro to "Dusk In Sandi" recalls Powell's often forgotten lyrical side. Turning back to straight bebop, Powell's "Oblivion" and later "Tempus Fugit" give the band an intense workout. Of special note, Corea's own "Bud Powell" is a radiant piece that captures Powell's rhythmic flair while gliding through a beautifully cascading harmonic progression.Down Beat (4/97, p.48) - 4.5 Stars (out of 5) - "...some of the most fertile give-and-take of the year....Chick's nod to his mentor is superb....Whether you're a novice or a fanatic, this Bud's for you." Therefore, her and Boggie (AKA Boogz) decided that their image should stand out amongst other rappers. Together, U-Niqe and Boogz attracted attention from A&R’s due to their originality by being the new “Bonnie & Clyde” or the new “Groove Theory” of this hip-hop industry, except that the female, U-Niqe, is a lyricist, not a singer.
