Saxophonist Steve Wilson continues to be one of the most gifted young woodwind specialists on the modern scene. His intellectual approach and studied chops are coupled with a deep spiritual base and driving creativity. On PASSAGES, Wilson leads everything from a duo with pianist Bruce Barth to trios, quartets, and quintets with some of his closest contemporaries including trumpeter Nicholas Payton, bassist Ed Howard, and drummer/percussionist Adam Cruz. Together, this set reveals many of Wilson's abilities that have kept him extremely busy throughout his career.
The musical avenues that Wilson chooses to explore are as varied as the instruments that he has mastered. Complex jazz tunes like the opening "Turnin' The Corner, " with Wilson on alto, are balanced by more eclectic works like the Latin groove "Song For Anna" that features flute, Fender Rhodes, bass and a rhythmic shaker. Wilson also proves to be an adept soprano stylist on tunes like the gliding "Eye Of The Beholder" and Keith Jarrett's free-floating "Days And Nights Waiting." Other highlights of Wilson's talent include the burning "The Lexter" and the Caribbean-esque percussion feature "Roots & Herbs."

JazzTimes (10/00, p.97) - "...A fine work that indicates a Wilson masterpiece is forthcoming." Passages music CDs
$13.55 Listening to Carmen Lundy "live" on Jazz and the New Songbook: Live at the Madrid is truly a remarkable experience and solidifies the adage that she is in a class all her own. On this exceptional two-disc set, the multi-talented vocalist performs 18 of her original compositions accompanied by some of the music world's most talented musicians. Recorded February 18, 2005, at the Madrid Theatre in Los Angeles, CA, the concert opens with the hit song "In Love Again," the optimistic ode to romance that was previously released on Something to Believe In. Lundy's multi-octave range is fluid, sensuous, and sexy. It is captivating as it floats with seductive nuance and swinging rhythms. "Better Days," originally heard on Carmen's Self ...

$13.85 The Good and Evil Sessions are the first in Thirsty Ear's Blue Series Continuum, which emphasizes diverse styles of music with a rotating, leaderless cast of musicians. This one melds Danny Blume and Chris Kelly of Good and Evil fame with turntable maven Miso and some of the heavy-hitters from the avant-garde jazz world, including bassist William Parker, pianist Matthew Shipp, and trumpeter Roy Campbell. The results are unpredictable and deliciously sassy, with groove-based throbs, jazz beats, and turntable scratches setting the stage for down-in-the-bucket solos that purr with joyous abandon. Free improv meets punk and dance rhythms ...
| | Great American Love Songs: The Romantic Standards Collection CD (2004)
Passages album
$11.49 The love songs that closed out the 20th century tended to be a blinders-off, gritty assessment of the emotion, as if love were a competition or an exhausting (and sometimes ugly) long distance race. Pat Benatar's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" comes immediately to mind, or the creepy undercurrent to Sting's "Every Move You Make," which raises obsessive paranoia to the level of art. Even the apparent joyous infectiousness of one of 2003's most popular songs, OutKast's "Hey Ya," actually explores the divisiveness of love and the difficulty in keeping two people together, even as its funky, bubbling rhythm pulls couples to the dancefloor. All of which makes this collection of love songs from America's golden age of melody so startling when you really listen in to what is being said. Love, instead of being a challenge, is a wistful dream to cling to, an aspiration for a better life, ...
