| | Poncho Sanchez Soul Sauce: Memories Of Cal Tjader CD Poncho Sanchez Discography of CDs
On Soul Sauce, Poncho Sanchez pays tribute to his late boss and hero vibraphonist Cal Tjader. Ruben Estrada of the Estrada Brothers (who sounds remarkably close to Tjader on vibes) was added to Sanchez' octet for the special project. Among the highlights are "Soul Sauce," "Morning," and "Poinciana Cha Cha." Solos are taken by trumpeter Stan Martin, trombonist Alex Henderson, and Scott Martin on reeds, but Estrada often takes honors. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow

JazzTimes (2/96, p.90) - "...Sanchez plays with a simmering, persuasive subtlety on every tune, a master of contained rhythm..." Jazziz (12/95, p.90) - "...In SOUL SAUCE: MEMORIES OF CAL TJADER, Sanchez brings the full heat of his hard-swinging octet to a hand-picked program of Tjader fare, evoking but not mimicking the master malleteer's velvety touch..." | | Poncho Sanchez Baila Mi Gente: Salsa! CD (1996)
Soul Sauce: Memories Of Cal Tjader CD music
$9.65 Although instrumental Latin jazz is Poncho Sanchez's forte, the L.A. percussionist usually included one or two salsa tunes with vocals on his Concord albums of the 1980s and 1990s. Focusing primarily on Sanchez's salsa recordings, this excellent 1996 compilation spans 1982-1995 and draws on eight of his Concord albums. Sanchez is best known for his work as a percussionist, but the fact that he's far from a bad singer is evident on his infectious original "Baila Mi Gente" and versions of Eddie Palmieri's "Cuidate Compai" and the classic "Co Co My My." One of the disc's best-known tracks is "Sonando," a catchy cha-cha based on Ray Barretto's major hit "Cocinando." The exuberant "Este Son" would have been a better choice than "Soul Sauce" -- not because Sanchez's Cal Tjader-influenced ...

| | Gang Font Featuring Interloper CD (2007)
Soul Sauce: Memories Of Cal Tjader songs
$13.85 Gang Font featuring Interloper is certainly the most "rock" entry in Thirsty Ear's Blue Series, not surprising given the participation of a former member of Hüsker Dü (Greg Norton). Given that the rest of the band consists of one of avant-jazz's most exciting keyboard players (Craig Taborn) and members of the Bad Plus and/or Happy Apple (Dave King and Erik Fratzke), you can be sure that it's going to be a lot more challenging than your basic rock & roll. And that it is: polyrhythmic, angular riffs and frequent time changes are the order of the day here. But most of it is also fairly catchy and well written, not just tricky for tricky's sake. Several tracks have a particularly Beefhearty flavor, like "Homage: Claude Schnell" and "The Litigious Mike Love." "The Familiar Cadence of Banging" is almost metal while "A Chance to Play Across the Shadows" has an odd serpentine melody and allows room for Taborn to do some really creative things with the ...
