| | Tito Puente Party With Puente! CD Tito Puente Discography of CDs
This sizzling, spicy 11-track compilation of Tito Puente's greatest works including his hottest rumbas, mambos, and what is sometimes referred to as the double mambo, the chachachá, is the closest documentation of the "live" excitement and fervor that the genius brought to his audiences during his brilliant lifetime. Packed with the vibrant energy of the world-loved bandleader, Party With Tito is just that, a great party. Tito Puente & His Latin Ensemble play a solid program featuring songs from many of his previously released CDs, including five that he wrote for a variety of formats. "Oye Como Va," the major hit recorded by Carlos Santana and "Ran Kan Kan," with its killer brass section and exciting trumpet master Ray Vega, are just two of the songs that show the vast dimensions and greatness of the conguero. "Salsa Caliente" and the abanico on "Lambada Timbales," a song that displays why Puente felt so strongly about the importance of the timbales in Latin jazz, along with his masterful "Azu Ki Ki" are further proof of the depth of the compositional brilliance of the great Tito Puente. As he continued to entertain millions of audiences around the world, many great songs, including the Benny Golson classic composition "Killer Joe" originally released on Tito Puente, His Latin Ensemble & Orchestra Un Poco Loco, were recipients of his Latin heart, soul, and excellence. There will never be another Tito Puente Sr. but he continues to live in our hearts, minds, and souls and is very much alive on Party With Tito. ~ Paula Edelstein

Party With Puente! music CDs
$15.05 Either as a solo act or with his old band, Grant Lee Buffalo, Grant Lee Phillips has been making high-quality records for so long it's easy to forget that his records are so good. STRANGELET returns him to original compositions--after the covers experiment NINETEENEIGHTIES--and while overtly referential at times (he openly cops the guitar riffs and vocal phrasing of Marc Bolan on a few tracks), the songwriting, performances, and production choices are all stellar. Fans of mournful, understated, folk-tinged indie rock looking for a new hero since Elliot Smith's untimely death, need look no further.
The Strange Matter Of Mr. Grant-Lee PhillipsHurtling across our solar system at nearly a million miles per hour, a microscopic mite of rather mysterious matter smashes into Earth, rocketing straight through the solid ice sheet of Antarctica. Seismographs around the globe go haywire. Twenty-six seconds later, on the other side of the equator, the speeding speck explodes from the floor of the Indian Ocean off the coast of Sri Lanka, continuing its journey through the universe unabated. It happened on October 22, 1993. Or so some scientists speculate.Strangelets. Subatomic quark-related clusters of old school Big-Bang-style strange matter, so dense and volatile that even the most diminutive dot could theoretically swallow the planet up whole. Experts have yet to definitively prove the existence of such a quirky quark, but a much more tangible namesake has just burst into our atmosphere in the sonic form of Strangelet, the fifth solo release from acclaimed singer songwriter Grant-Lee Phillips. Described by the former Grant Lee Buffalo ringmaster as a "record for strange times," Strangelet packs a deft emotional wallop, delving deep into the inner conflagrations of the soul ("Runaway") and the outer combativeness of human nature ("Chain Lightnin'"), while at the same time reveling in the troubled essence of rock and roll ("Johnny Guitar"). All in all, it's a massive amount of beautifully strange energy crammed into the confines of a compact disc. 'The thought of all this strange matter floating around out there. That there's more under the stars than we can ever imagine - black holes, white dwarfs!' Phillips reflects with a laugh, "It's kind of nice, actually...."If the end of everything as we know it doesn't sound all that "nice" to you, perhaps you're unaware of Grant-Lee Phillips' lyrical knack ...

Party With Puente! CD music
$16.39 Egg is the creation of LA-based Jeff Fuller who wrote some songs with his young daughter Annabella, wrote some more songs himself, and recruited some other moms and dads to record the songs for an album.Reading over that description might not necessarily fill you with hope for the album -- good intentions and enthusiasm being a poor substitute for, you know, musical talent and songwriting skills -- but luckily their debut album Sunny Side Up has enough of that musical talent and songwriting skills to make it a fun listen. The band mentions Cake as one of their musical reference points, and I can hear that, at least in the somewhat spare arrangements that rely a lot on drums and, on a couple tracks, trumpet. But I hear more of a West Coast Brady Rymer. It's roots-rock mixed with a little country ...
