| | Silvio Rodriguez Mujeres CD Silvio Rodriguez Discography of CDs
Originally released in 1978, Silvio Rodríguez's Mujeres is often regarded as his masterpiece, representing a great artist at his very best. Instrumentally spare and transparent, the record is sonically crystal clear and shining. Rodríguez's guitar is bright and shimmering, and his voice has a bell-like open tone that would never sound quite as unencumbered and free again. The playlist includes some of his very finest material, including the light yet impassioned "Río" and heartbreaking "Y Nada Más." Recordings both before and after this album would have a significantly more produced, polished sound, with complex instrumentation and sophisticated studio work. The impression left by Mujeres is that of having heard Rodríguez give a private concert in his living room. The subtle intricacies of his guitar performance and emotional nuance of his lyrics are laid bare in the empty sonic space. Though some may prefer to hear Rodríguez in a more commercial context, Mujeres is a rare, listening room-style treat for those who would prefer a more intimate experience. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez

Mujeres album
$15.55 Cuban singer/songwriter Silvio Rodríguez established himself as one of the pioneers of the nueva trova in the early '70s alongside Pablo Milanés, Eduardo Ramos, Noel Nicola, and Sara González, fellow members of the state-sponsored Grupo de Experimentación Sonora. Dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Cuban revolution, 1979's Rabo de Nube shows continuity with Rodríguez's previous albums, its melodic folk-pop arrangements accompanying poignant, poetic lyrics sung in a fragile tenor. Simpler acoustic compositions like the title track (subsequently covered by the Pretenders on Viva el Amor) and the catchy "Fábula de los Tres Hermanos" are especially strong. However, only "Que Ya Viví, Que Te Vas" and "Con Diez Años de Menos" rise to the high standards set by earlier Rodríguez classics, such as "Playa Girón" and "Sueño con Serpientes" from his 1975 debut Días y Flores. Unfortunately, Rabo de Nube foregrounds the inconsistencies that have occasionally marred Rodríguez's work. It's not simply a case of the hit-and-miss nature of the tracks -- the misses being those numbers like "Te Amaré y Después" and "Imagínate" that find Rodríguez bogged down in saccharine territory -- at times, he manages to combine his best and worst tendencies within the same song, much to the frustration of the listener. Whereas the more effective numbers are almost wholly acoustic or strike a subtle, effective balance between acoustic and electronic instrumentation, ...
| | Silvio Rodriguez Unicornio CD (1982) Import
Mujeres CD music
$15.15 UNICORNIO is a 10-track digitally-remastered 1995 release by Latin artist Silvio Rodriguez, including "Por Quien Merece Amor" and "Cancion Urgente Para Nicaragua."
Silvio Rodriguez, often called the heart and mind of the Nueva Trova movement, has long been a leading social and political commentator for the Cuban people. Long before his 1981 release Unicornio, Rodriguez had been writing songs inspired by his country's Socialist Revolution in 1959. It was not until this release, however, that his artistry came to international notice. Nueva Trova (New Cuban Song) put the island on the map as not only a jazz/Afro-Caribbean hot spot, but as an environment that encouraged great intellect and poetry in its music. Rodriguez appropriately became the genre's most visible figure, performing all over the America's and encouraging similar musical trends to flourish in his wake (Nueva Cancion in Argentina). Unicornio is not only a gem of lyricism and socialist sentiment, but also a musical triumph. Featuring styles such as chacarera, Cuban fusion, North American folk music and the roots of Latin pop, Rodriguez puts a sweet coating on his political pill. Even bitter commentary goes down easy, thanks to Rodriguez' intelligent melodic sense and pleasant voice. Like the Beatles White Album and Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life, Silvio Rodriguez' ...

AMERICAN BEAUTY was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album.
Always a delight, the Nashville Bluegrass Band is one of the best in any genre. Pure and true to the music, they pull off such classics as the Flatt & Scruggs song "The Johnson Boys" and Ralph Stanley's "Holiday Pickin'" with finesse. They do a wonderful cover of Bob Dylan's "Livin' the Blues" and make the Gillian Welch-David Rawlings tune "Red Clay Halo" feel almost ancient. "All Alone," penned by Candice Randolph, is outstanding, with Alan O'Bryant's banjo calling out to the faithful. ~ Jana Pendragon

| | Gilberto Gil Nightingale CD (1979) (Import)
Mujeres album
$22.35 NIGHTINGALE is the 1979 effort from the great Gilberto Gil, and features "Sah-rah-rah," "Alapala, and the title track, among other songs.
Gilberto Gil spent much of the 1970s recording at home in Brazil and had one recording issued in America during that time. His first English-speaking record (which was simply self-titled) was issued by Phillips worldwide and briefly by Paramount in the United States. He signed to WEA International in 1977. This album is the first result of that pairing. Nightingale was recorded in Los Angeles with Sergio Mendes, Alex Acuna, Oscasr Castro Neves, and some crack American studio talent that included Don Gruisin and Michael Sembello. The music is polished, bright, and runs the gamut, from the calypso-flavored "Goodbye My Girl," sung in English, to the gorgeous, mid-tempo MPB ballad "Sarara," that opens the disc. Gil recorded a little less than half the set in English, but he sacrificed nothing else musically. His tribute to Ella Fitzgerald, "Ella," is a track Michael Franks would have killed to write and record. The slippery funk backbeat, electric pianos, and skittering backbeat rhythms are simply infectious. The album as a whole is seamless, so utterly happy and carefree it sounds effortless. Check "Alapalá," and the carnivale anthem "Balafon," which cooks with tropicalismo ...
