UNICORNIO is a 10-track digitally-remastered 1995 release by Latin artist Silvio Rodriguez, including "Por Quien Merece Amor" and "Cancion Urgente Para Nicaragua."
Silvio Rodriguez, often called the heart and mind of the Nueva Trova movement, has long been a leading social and political commentator for the Cuban people. Long before his 1981 release Unicornio, Rodriguez had been writing songs inspired by his country's Socialist Revolution in 1959. It was not until this release, however, that his artistry came to international notice. Nueva Trova (New Cuban Song) put the island on the map as not only a jazz/Afro-Caribbean hot spot, but as an environment that encouraged great intellect and poetry in its music. Rodriguez appropriately became the genre's most visible figure, performing all over the America's and encouraging similar musical trends to flourish in his wake (Nueva Cancion in Argentina). Unicornio is not only a gem of lyricism and socialist sentiment, but also a musical triumph. Featuring styles such as chacarera, Cuban fusion, North American folk music and the roots of Latin pop, Rodriguez puts a sweet coating on his political pill. Even bitter commentary goes down easy, thanks to Rodriguez' intelligent melodic sense and pleasant voice. Like the Beatles White Album and Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life, Silvio Rodriguez' Unicornio is a record that not only helped define an artist, but an entire genre. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez
Digitally remastered of the 1995 album from the Cuban singer/songwriter whose tender balladry offshoots his hard-edged, politically-slanted lyrics. A spearhead of the nueva trova (New Ballad) style of nueva cancion (New Song), Rodriguez masterfully blends romantic tunes with protest material condemning colonization and the tyranny that swept through Latin America in the late '60s and early '70s. Unicornio Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) The best for last I bought this CD because of the title song Unicornio, which is the final track of the album. A great, great song. I was hoping the rest of the album would be as dramatic, but I was somewhat disappointed.
This album is for a lazy afternoon when you want to take things slow. There is a monotone overtone throughout the album with not much upbeat performances.
He saved the best song for last.

better than classic, full of feelings and deep "La maza", "La primera mentira", "Por quien merece amor", "Unicornio"... maybe the best songs of this CD, have lyrics, melody, armony, and beat in perfect relationship...
All the songs don't like me, but without doubts... he's a genius. Submitted by Frank (Hialeah, FL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Silvio's Best In this Album, Silvio starts to explore with new sounds, living the "Guitar only" style, but not so orchestral as Causas y Azahares. The lyrics are beautiful and it is recognized as one of the few albums in music history where ALL the songs are good, not saving anything for a posterior one. Cossy people tend to love Unicornio only, but you will find songs as Cancion Urgente para Nicaragua, which is a portrait of the Cuban support to the Sandinista movement, and an anthem for the solidarity movement for Nicaragua. El sol no da de beber, Por quien merece amor and Son Desangrado are beautiful songs with a double meaning (like Unicornio), of romantic love and of Revolution in Cuba, Nicaragua and El Salvador. deeply poetic This is the famous album that Silvio produce at the beggining of the 1980s. It has some of his more known songs, like the title, "Unicornio" and "Por quien merece amor". It was, also the first Silvio's album in which reached the best production when playin with simphonic orchesta, tropical orchesta, piano solist, etc. It is a kind of top "classic" song style album. But it is also an "engaged" album. Regarding its poetry it is interesting that as subjective as its lyrics are, allude however to the political context--the war in El Salvador and the intervention of USA in Cuba and Nicaragua. "Por quien merece amor" asks the USA goverment: "Are you angry because of my love?" Linked to compromise is also "Cancion urgente para Nicaragua". The song "Pioneros" quotes the Cuban national anthem, and was composed during Silvio's trip to Angola (which remember was at that time in war also!). "Son desangrado" and "La maza" are excellent songs (musically and lirically) that established the etic principles of the songwriter. "El sol no da de beber" is one of the best love song of Silvio. And "Unicornio" is one of his best songs. I think it was dedicated to El Salvador. Submitted by a reviewer (Pittsburgh, PA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Purchase Unicornio CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Paul Butterfield Blues Band CD (1965)
Unicornio
$6.19 The '60s Blues Revival begins here. Calling this album influential is an understatement akin to calling the Grand Canyon a rut; suffice to say that an entire generation of musicians (mostly young and white) heard this and had their lives changed forever. In fact, for at least a year after the album's release in 1965, it was impossible to walk down the hall of any college dorm in America without hearing one of the songs here echoing from somebody's room.
Heard today, the thing still packs a wallop. Butterfield's harmonica and vocals are utterly idiomatic, without a hint of minstrelsy. Michael Bloomfield's lead guitar is stinging and eloquent, and the rhythm section, on loan from Howling Wolf, swings like mad. The only fly in the ointment is the ...

| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Unicornio
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness than the Dublin production of RIVERDANCE. There's also a lovely rendition of Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" that's topped only by Ron Wood's reappearance ...
| | Drive-By Truckers Southern Rock Opera CDs (2001) Digipak
Unicornio
$11.99 A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting the modern era's relative lack of story-driven albums divided into "Act I" and "Act II" will latch onto SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA with the same passion with which they embraced THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY. And most importantly, unreconstructed Southern rockers of the boogie-and-beer variety will appreciate the fact that this is an unapologetic, non-ironic valentine to the sound of not only Skynyrd, but the Allman Brothers, the Marshall Tucker Band, and the modern-day jam bands that are their musical descendents. Funny ...
| | Antony I Am A Bird Now CD (2005)
Unicornio
$12.49 Though he probably achieved his greatest mainstream recognition backing up Lou Reed on tour, idiosyncratic songbird Antony is a fully established artiste in his own right. Backed by the Johnsons, as on I AM A BIRD NOW, he crafts delicate ballads that skirt the lines between cabaret, artsong, and pop, with the kind of voice that Stephin Merritt would probably kill for. Antony's unique pipes bring to mind an androgynous Bryan Ferry or a high, quavery summit meeting between Jimmy Scott (another Reed supporter) and Aaron Neville. The stately, graceful, largely piano-driven songs on I AM A BIRD NOW are full of honest, uncluttered emotion, but never go over the top. The communication is direct and immediate, as wisps of melancholy settle around the listener. Guest shots by kindred spirits Rufus Wainwright, Devendra Banhart, and Reed himself vary the tone a bit, but the fragile beauty of this album is a singular, affecting thing.

| | Dredg Catch Without Arms CD (2005)
Unicornio
$8.49 Early on, critics often described Dredg as a metal group. However, the quartet has since matured into a hard-edged indie-rock ensemble that seeks diversity and refinement in its music. On CATCH WITHOUT ARMS, the band favors highly orchestrated parts, dense guitar riffs, and powerful drumming. Each song is based around memorable vocal hooks and sensitive lyrical content.
Many tracks on CATCH WITHOUT ARMS have a searching quality to them. Despite the sheer force of the music, this release is ultimately marked by well constructed ...

Unicornio
$13.25 The second volume in a series that collects rare 45s from mostly forgotten 1960s garage and punk bands from Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, Diggin' for Gold, Vol. 2 is a collector's delight. Most of these bands never had more than a regional hit, if that, and while there is a lot of energy, intent, and purpose on display here, it's pretty easy to see why few of these sides ever penetrated too far into the international pop world. Full of chaotic, messy arrangements and production, ...
| | Brazilian Beats CD (2000) (Import) Box Set; United Kingdom
Unicornio
$14.89 Latin music specialists Mr Bongo have assembled an overwhelming compilation in BRAZILIAN BEATS. Though it's probably targeted at the advanced listener, the disc is so diverse and consistently surprising that it's just as likely to ensnare the curious Brazilian music novice too.
Beginning with a trio of remixed heavily rhythmic tracks, the listener is transported to Rio via a house party. Airto Moreira's famous "Celebration Suite" is stripped to a dancefloor cut, a deliberate nod to both past and future. While other name artists appear--Jorge Ben's Afro-groove "Carolina Carol Beta" and Milton Banana's ...
