(3 Customer Reviews)
Between 1967 and 1973, the 5th Dimension enjoyed 29 U.S. hit singles on the Soul City and Bell labels. This compilation selects all of their Top 40 hits (bar two live tracks) and tops up the running order with five lesser hits. Top-notch material by Jimmy Webb, Laura Nyro, Neil Sedaka and Bacharach & David is rendered as exquisite harmony pop by the vocal group and their producer Bones Howe.
Although "Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In" (from the musical "Hair") and Nyro's "Wedding Bell Blues" were the chart-toppers, Webb's "Up, Up And Away" is the archetypal 5th Dimension sound. That the songs still sound remarkably fresh is due to the avoidance of formulaic writing, with no one writer or team being allowed to dominate. From the first hit, tellingly a cover of the Mamas & The Papas' "Go Where You Wanna Go," via material by Tony Macaulay, Sloan & Barri, and Ashford & Simpson, the quality never diminishes.
Digitally remastered, definitive 22 track budget collection of the best of the pop/soul quintet who premiered many songs from Laura Nyro and Jimmy Webb. All their biggest hits are here like 'Up Up & Away', 'Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In', 'Stoned Soul Picnic', 'Wedding Bell Blues', 'One Less Bell to Answer', 'Workin On A Groovy Thing' plus many more. Very Best Of The 5th Dimension Music Very Best Of The 5th Dimension Music Very Best Of The 5th Dimension Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) Arrangements NOT for today's shortened attention spans. When I was a kid, I had one Fifth Dimension album but did not listen to it very much. But every so often, I would pull it out and listen to it, even though they weren't considered "cool" among my group of friends. There was something about the intricacies of the musical arrangements that appealed to me.
Since receiving this CD, I have found myself listening to it over and over, listening a little closer each time to the intricate musical arrangements. Listening to this music again after all those years have gone by, I can see that music like this is rare these days. Perhaps it is because people don't seem to have the ability to focus on detail like they once did. Attention spans seem shortened. But taking the time to REALLY listen to GOOD, WELL COMPOSED music is worthwhile, and the only effort involved is to relax and let the music reach you.
This CD has a very good comprehensive song list, and the sound quality is good, although a few of these songs show their age through the manner in which they were originally recorded. Still, I recommend this one. Submitted by a reviewer (Western U.S.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.

Truly the Best I purchased this CD as a birthday gift for a friend and he has done nothing but rave about it! Apparently, this compilation contains many gems which are not found elsewhere (i.e., "Workin' on a Groovy Thing" [which my friend HAD to have] and "The Girl's Song"). He "loves the CD so much that [he] is taking it from [his] home [player] to his car and back home again." A+. Submitted by brian.thompson (New York, New York) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

This early release from singer Olivia Newton-John showcases her country-pop mode, with "Have You Ever Been Mellow," "Goodbye Again," and others showing off her refined vocal grace.
The hit single "Have You Never Been Mellow" carried Olivia Newton-John right back to number one, six months after "I Honestly Love You" brought the singer to that coveted position for the first time. The title track is a masterpiece of songwriting by her producer, John Farrar, an exquisitely pleasant melody with a sunny and peaceful theme. Having covered ...
