Buddy Ackerman is a vicious, egomaniacal, tyrannical, back-stabbing movie mogul. Guy is the idealistic, easily intimidated, put-upon assistant who now works for Buddy. Their relationship could be described as sado-masochistic: Buddy treats his employee like a slave and constantly yells vitriolic insults at him. Guy, tail between his legs, always acquiesces. But Guy eventually becomes fed-up with his boss, so much so that he exacts revenge--in a rather violent, torturous way... A motion picture executive's assistant puts up with his abusive boss up to a point and then completely snaps in this ultra-dark comedy from first-time director (and former Hollywood assistant) George Huang. Released theatrically in New York City April 21, 1995.
The Los Angeles Film Critics Association voted Kevin Spacey runner-up for the best supporting actor prize for his body of work in 1995.

Swimming With Sharks Video Swimming With Sharks Movie Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars)  Swimming With Sharks Has Bite
Don't expect a happy comedy or a date movie, for that matter (unless your significant other shares your dark, irreverent, caustic sense of humor). This is one dark, demented flick. It's also one of Kevin Spacey's finest performances. He shows tremendous depth of character while chewing up the scenery. His is a true tour de force and one you will never forget (especially if, like myself, you once worked for just such a studio executive and can identify--intimately--with the lead character). That said, the film's back and forth story structure (you'll have to view it to understand what I mean), I believe, softens the dramatic blow of the (shocking) surprise ending. Although I'm a big fan of breaking with tradition, a more chronological story arch may have proven more successful--and satisfying--here. But as low budget indie pictures go, this one is a gem, minor shortcomings aside.
