While spying on her son and his date on a trip to the zoo, Lionel's domineering mother (Elizabeth Moody) is bitten by a vicious Sumatran rat monkey and consequently starts manifesting some rather peculiar behavior, attacking all those unfortunate enough to get in her way and turning them into zombies. Poor Lionel (Timothy Balme) is forced to hide her victims in his basement in order to conceal his mother's grotesque affliction from his love interest, Paquita (Diana Peñalver). But soon his mom's zombified entourage starts to rebel and becomes too much for Lionel to handle. In the raucous finale, Lionel takes on a whole army of the undead (plus the occasional unruly bodily organ) with his trusty lawnmower and finally confronts his mother in an all-out Oedipal extravaganza. Though so over the top that it's often classified as a comedy rather than a fright film, DEAD ALIVE has also been touted as one of the goriest horror movies ever made--so be warned: It's not for the faint of heart or weak of stomach. Peter Jackson, master of subversive comedy, presents the story of a hapless young man whose overbearing mother gets him into a heap of trouble when she catches a bizarre zombie virus and starts turning innocent passersby into walking corpses. This grandiose splatterfest features loads of unforgettable, stomach-turning effects. Highlights include a ghoulish, bloodthirsty baby, zombie mutilation, progressive putrefaction, and an off-the-wall undead mating scene. Sick, twisted, and hilarious, DEAD ALIVE is unlike anything you have ever seen before--and is definitely not for the squeamish.

The film was released as BRAINDEAD outside the United States. It was renamed DEAD ALIVE here because another movie with the original title--BRAIN DEAD (1990), directed by Adam Simon--already existed.
Creature and gore effects were created by Richard Taylor. To achieve the most disgusting look possible, pork fat, latex, polyfoam, human hair, and hundreds of gallons of maple syrup were among the materials used.
Director Peter Jackson has a cameo appearance as an undertaker's assistant.

Wow, I'd always heard about this movie for so long and never had the chance to see it. But after I got it from Video Universe, I popped it right into my DVD player and sat down! From the opening scene, you know you're in for something different. This movie has some of the funniest dialogue ever and because it's so gory to the point of no return, it just can't be taken seriously after a while! I literally watched it twice, right after the other! I've never done that with any other movie, but this one is just so good I had to! The whole movie, while shot with a low budget, is very good and deserves a view by anyone who loves gore, comdey, b-movies, or just needs something different for a change.

This movie is well worth the price. The combination of humor and tons of gore make a great combination.

Another absolute classic gor-splattered funny from Peter Jackson. Called Brain Dead in New Zealand the plot has our hero surrounded by his rabid mother and mad relatives and neighbours after mummy dearest was bitten by a deseased monkey. The amount of blood and guts in this movie has to be seen to be believed but it is so soooooo funny. The sequence when the hero is being chased by the half bloody and bony torso which then farts is wonderful and the use of the family lawn mower is a truely wonderful site to behold. A very very funny movie that probably employed the most New Zealand actors at one time (except for his soon to be Lord of the Rings) and a must see for all Jackson fans.

This is one of my favorite Peter Jackson movies. I couldn't stop laughing through the whole thing. This movie takes graphic violence to an absurd level.

gory, so gory. a great horrer film filled with screams and laughs. if your a fan of the evil dead films then give this movie a whirl.
