| | Die Warzau Engine CD Die Warzau Discography of CDs
By the time its third album was released, the Chicago-based electronic duo Die Warzau (Jim Marcus and Van Christie) had already released two albums (1989's Disco Rigido and 1991's Big Electric Metal Bass Face) on two record labels. After several years of inactivity (though the band did production work for Sister Machine Gun and KMFDM), Die Warzau finally resurfaced in 1995 with Engine; the album was released on the Chicago-based industrial-music label Wax Trax, and this new home fit Die Warzau like a silk glove. Engine is a major leap forward for Die Warzau, as it contains some of its most hard-hitting (and surprisingly pop-friendly) material. The album is diverse in sounds and styles, and the mixture of moods and musical approach shows astonishing artistic depth. Engine utilizes many of the ingredients of Die Warzau's first two albums, but the band has evolved considerably since its debut, utilizing a more apparent dance approach with each successive release. Atmospheric, electronic sound collages, squealing guitars, and minimalist lyrics are at the forefront on tracks like "Grounded" and "Muck." "Grounded" is particularly strong, combining Nine Inch Nails-style chanting in its chorus with rap-flavored verses. But the song is unusually catchy, showing off Die Warzau's expertise in crafting pop hooks without sacrificing the heavy approach. "Heroin A.D." is also a keeper, with its inventive mixture of sax, piano, and throbbing bass. Engine's best track is the haunting "All Good Girls." The tune's chilling lyric contrasts beautifully with its quiet, repetitive groove, making "All Good Girls" sound like some sort of demented lullaby. Die Warzau's mixture of musical styles on Engine can take a listener by surprise -- track by track, it's difficult to predict what direction the band will take next. The song's subject matter is surprising in itself, revealing another side of a band that isn't shy about expressing its political views, but the straightforward, almost pop-friendly approach on "All Good Girls" makes much of Engine's genre-hopping seem excessive by comparison. Fortunately, Die Warzau possesses the sophistication and craftsmanship to make Engine a remarkably intelligent release in a genre not really known for its depth. Simply put, Engine is one of the greatest industrial albums of all time. ~ William Cooper

Alternative Press (2/95, pp.58-59) - "...For the artisan, true craftmanship lies in the careful attention to details. Warzau have long understood this....with ENGINE they've achieved true mastery of the electronic craft. The skilled mixings of genres and styles is mere child's play for them..." Option (7-8/95, p.99) - "...The problem with Die Warzau is that it's too smart for its own good; its musical sophistication is admirable but not particularly accesible..." | | Les Claypool Live Frogs: Set 1 CD (2001)
Engine music CDs
$10.95 Taking a welcome break from Primus, this Les Claypool side project finds him reunited with Sausage bandmates and original Primus members Todd Huth (guitars) and Jay Lane (drums), but this time they've brought a few friends along for the ride. Keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, who's also in Ratdog with Lane, has played with jazz legends like Pharoah Sanders and James Moody; saxophonist Skerik has played with New Orleans funksters Galactic and world music experimentalists Tuatara; and guitarist Eenor was chosen by Claypool from submissions he received from musicians around the Bay Area after placing an ad in the paper. Together, they tackle an hour-long, seven-song set that's long on prog rock-style jamming and short on "Jerry Was a Racecar Driver"-like accessibility. As if to reinforce the prog connection, the group's live debut opens with a 14-minute cover of King Crimson's "Thela Hun Ginjeet" and closes with a 12-minute version of Pink Floyd's "Shine on You Crazy Diamond." The five songs sandwiched ...

$15.75 Starved for affection, yet marching deliriously on, the most critically cudgeled British band of 1976 released their second album just six months after their debut Late Night Movies, All Night Brainstorms, almost as if they'd never read a word that had been written about them. And certainly as if they never cared about any of them. Figments of Emancipation is so much the son of its predecessor that the two could ...

| | ZZ Top Tres Hombres CD (1973) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Engine CD music
$5.99 On 1973's TRES HOMBRES, everything came together for ZZ Top. While it was near inconceivable that the trio could better its superb previous effort, 1972's RIO GRANDE MUD, here ZZ Top somehow found a way to make the riffs tastier and the blues boogie more lethal.
One of classic rock's most identifiable standards, "La Grange," resides here, borrowing liberally from John Lee Hooker. But there's even more great blues-rock to feast on--the moderately paced "Waitin' for the Bus," the 12-bar blues of "Jesus Just Left Chicago," and the party-hearty anthem "Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers" (a tune Van Halen has covered live from time to time). Elsewhere, the thick rocker "Precious and Grace" easily gives Led Zeppelin a run for its money.
Tres Hombres is the record that brought ZZ Top their first Top Ten record, making them stars in the process. It couldn't have happened to a better record. ZZ Top finally got their low-down, cheerfully sleazy blooze-n-boogie right on this, their third album. As their sound gelled, producer Bill Ham discovered how to record the trio so simply that they sound indestructible, and the group brought the best set of songs they'd ever have to the table. On the surface, there's nothing really special about the record, since it's just a driving blues-rock album from a Texas bar band, but that's what's special about it. It has a filthy groove and an infectious feel, thanks to Billy Gibbons' growling guitars and the steady propulsion of Dusty Hill and Frank Beard's rhythm section. They get the blend of bluesy shuffles, gut-bucket rocking, and off-beat humor just right. ZZ Top's very identity comes from this earthy sound and songs as utterly infectious as "Waitin' for the Bus," "Jesus Just Left Chicago," "Move Me on Down the Line," and the John Lee Hooker boogie "La ...
| | Definitive Story Of CBGB: The Home Of Us Punk CDs (2006)
Engine music CDs
$16.29 Two CD compilation featuring 34 tracks by some of the biggest and most influential acts to play the historic NY nightclub during the rise of Punk Rock and New Wave in the mid-to-late '70s.. Includes tracks from The Plasmatics, Bad Brains, The B-52s, Television, Pere Ubu, Patti Smith, MC5, The Ramones, Devo, New York Dolls, Velvet Underground, Iggy & The Stooges, The Dead boys, The Dictators, The Cramps, Tuff Darts and even club owner Hilly Kristal!. Salvo. 2006.
The New York City landmark CBGB closed its doors for good in the fall of 2006 after a remarkable 33-year run that saw the dingy Bowery dive become immortalized for its role in fostering the punk rock revolution of the 1970s. Owner Hilly Kristal never intended to showcase rock bands when he opened the club (its full name, CBGB & OMFUG, actually stands for Country, Bluegrass, Blues and Other Music for Uplifting Gormandizers), but when he allowed young new aggressive bands like the Ramones and Television to work on their acts and the crowds grew larger, he stuck with the format and history followed. The Definitive Story of CBGB is one compilation that not only lives up to its title but goes beyond by defining a time and place. Not all of the bands showcased on the two CDs actually played the club -- there's a section at the start of disc two devoted to influences the New York Dolls, MC5, the Stooges, and the Velvet Underground -- but nearly every band that did contribute to the legend of CB's is represented here (Talking Heads is the only major pioneering CB's band that's MIA; of the somewhat major bands, Richard Hell & the Voidoids are the only striking omission). As such, the collection stands as one of the tightest, most filler-free, and most exciting summations of '70s/'80s punk and new wave music ever assembled. Patti Smith, the poet/goddess who helped the club gain notice, turns up not with a track from her groundbreaking Arista Records debut but the indie single that preceded it, "Piss Factory," a stark, freestyle word jam unlike anything else going on in popular music at the time. Blondie, fronted by punk's other major frontwoman, Deborah Harry, also checks in with an early single, "X Offender," which combined the girl group ethos of the early '60s with driving pop and Chris Stein's surf-esque guitar. The Ramones, Television, the Shirts, the Dead Boys, Tuff Darts, the Dictators, Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers, and the soulful Mink DeVille (who were not punk at all but a vital part ...
