Released in 1999, TRULY finds reggae queen Marcia Griffiths putting down new vocals over classic tracks recorded by Coxsone Dodd in the late 1960s. Though that might sound like a recipe for inorganic, retro-themed disaster, the blend works amazingly well, thanks to both the superb quality of Dodd's original tracks and the supple beauty of Griffiths's voice.

Griffiths has a way of making roots reggae sound as smooth and buttery as Nat King Cole, without diluting any of its essential character. This is especially true on cuts like "I Need Love," "I Shall Sing," and "Shimmering Star," where Griffiths's alto floats like a drowsy, gorgeous bird over sweet, syncopated rhythms. Die-hard fans of vintage recordings might want to seek out the work Griffiths and Dodd released in the '60s, but anyone else will find this a thoroughly absorbing listen.

Recorded in Kingston, Jamaica.

Recording information: Jamaican Publishing And Recording Studios LTD, Kingston (1960-1998).

Photographer: David Corio.

Personnel includes: Marcia Griffiths (vocals); The Soul BRothers; The Soul Vendors; The Sound Dimension; The Vikings.

CMJ (2/1/99, p.32) - "...also features new tracks and unreleased classics from the '60s that will have reggae collectors drooling..."

After spending 12 years as a member of Bob Marley's Wailers, Peter Tosh was eager to break free from the shadow of the legendary frontman. In 1976, he released LEGALIZE IT, still one of the most significant albums in the history of reggae. The title track expresses one of Tosh's many political causes, justifying the legalization of marijuana as a remedy for various medical ailments. "Burial" is one of several tracks that features the talents of the Wailers' stand-out lead guitarist, Al Anderson. Tosh adds his own seasoning to the reggae pot as he incorporates keyboards in "Whatcha Gonna Do" and synthesizers and sound effects on "Igziabeher." "Ketchy Shuby," a sing-along about fooling around, features the background vocal talents of Rita Marley, Bunny Wailer, and Judy Mowatt. Tosh's life ended too early, and LEGALIZE IT is the strongest testament to his legacy. Take a listen, and share the spirit of his genius. After years of being overshadowed by Bob Marley, Peter Tosh left the Wailers to pursue a solo career. Released in 1976, Legalize It is a bold statement ...
Bless Me Jah
Dennis Brown Bless Me Jah CD  (1999)

Truly music CDs
CD $10.49
Another sumptuous offering from Dennis Brown, brilliantly overseen by Errol "Flabba" Holt. Although well over half the tracks are covers or remodels of his own hits, so powerful are the singer's performances, so inspired the arrangements, that everything sounds brand new. Only four of the covers are actually acknowledged, included a chirpy take on Harry Nilsson's hit "Everybody's Talking at Me," an impassioned version of Marvin Gaye & Mary Wells' much covered standard "Once Upon a Time," an evocative retread of Santana's "Black Magic Woman," which the singer covered to much effect in the past, as well as a soulful take on the Impressions' "No Man Is an Island." Brown initially cut a cover of the latter number almost three decades ago for Studio One. It became his first Jamaican hit, but is so Brown-like in its universal brotherhood theme it could pass as one of his own later compositions. Kenny Rogers will assuredly be perplexed not merely by the lack of credit for his "Decorated My Life," but by the song's punchy dancehall backing. The Jamaican artists plundered, however, are used to this recycling and should be pleased by Brown's fabulous performances and Holt's clever arrangements. Thus, the lovely "If You Should Lose Me" beautifully blends sharp beats, flowery piano riffs, and lush '50s-styled brass, while Jackie Estick's "Since You've Been Gone" is reborn in the steamiest of fashion as the smoldering "My Heart Is Gone." He returns to his own hit songbook for "Your Love Is Amazing," which boasts a particularly daring arrangement melding smoky brass, digitized drums, and a C&W tinge seemingly conjured right out of the air. That song was covered by a young Errol Dunkley for his scorching "Darling Ooh," and Brown returns the favor with a steamy rendition of Dunkley's "Black Cinderella," set to a punchy backing boasting some of the best organ and piano riffing on the record. "There's No Love and Understanding" reinvigorates an old rocksteady rhythm, with breezy piano riffs and particularly effective work from trombonist Nambo Robinson. Brown shines here, as he does throughout this album. For cultural fans he resurrects another of his old hits, "The Half," in glorious roots fashion. For soul fans there's "Take Me to the Top," ...
Party In Session: Live
Michael Rose Party In Session: Live CD  (1998)

Truly songs
CD $13.89  5 stars Audio Samples
It had been over a decade since Michael Rose had last performed in the States. Although the artist continued recording after his departure from Black Uhuru, none of his music was released in the U.S., and fans were thrilled when the first finally appeared in 1995, driven to distraction by his inclusion on the Heartbeat label's Culture Splash Tour the following year. Party in Session -- Live was recorded during this tour, with the bulk from his set at Slims in San Francisco on June 21 and a pair of numbers taken from the show at Red Rocks in August. The audience can barely contain themselves; their continuous cheering and singing act as a sonic backdrop to Rose's 16-song strong set. It's a carefully chosen mix of new and old, showcasing some of Rose's greatest numbers from his Black Uhuru days and before ("I Love King Selassie" dates from that group's predecessor, Black Sounds Uhuru). Thus a steam of Uhuru classics are revisited -- "Sensemilla," "Shine ...
