| | Walter "Wolfman" Washington Funk Is In The House CD Walter "Wolfman" Washington Discography of CDs
Walter "Wolfman" Washington & The Roadmasters: Walter "Wolfman" Washington (guitar, vocals); Larry Carter (trumpet, alto saxophone, flute); Tom Fitzpatrick (tenor saxophone, alto saxophone); Dave Woodard (trombone); Luca Fredericksen (Hammond B-3 organ, piano, Wurlitzer piano); Jack Cruz (bass); Wilbert "Junk Yard Dog" Arnold (drums, percussion).
Recorded between September and November, 1997 at Ultrasonic Studios, New Orleans, Louisiana. Includes liner notes by John Sinclair.
Walter "Wolfman" Washington, who has an expressive and enthusiastic if not overly memorable voice, is virtually the entire show during this set which mixes together New Orleans funk and 60s soul with aspects of the blues. Although there are pieces by Jerry Butler, Ray Charles and Gamble and Huff, most of the selections are Washington originals. Wolfman's backup group the Roadmasters (a rhythm section with keyboardist Luca Fredericksen plus three guest horn players) is fine in support but fairly anonymous. So this set is primarily recommended to listeners who enjoy Washington's voice and the 60s-soul style in general. ~ Scott Yanow
Additional personnel: Charles Elam III, Curtis "Blo" Watson (background vocals). Funk Is In The House Music Walter "Wolfman" Washington Funk Is In The House Songs Funk Is In The House Review

| | Buddy Guy Heavy Love CD (1998)
Funk Is In The House CD music
$6.75 HEAVY LOVE was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album.
Following a trilogy of records that solidified Buddy Guy's early 90's comeback, HEAVY LOVE shows off the funkier side of this blues legend, with a few modern touches tossed into the mix. With former Prince sideman David Z as a producer, Guy's updated touches include using a syncopated, hip-hoppy rhythm track on the blues standard "I Just Want To Make Love To You." Although he's known for playing with a ferocity that's influenced everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Eric Clapton, Guy's playing is more economical this time out.
Much like Steve Cropper (who contributes guitar throughout), BG's fluid licks bob and weave whether it's off ...
| | Bobby "Blue" Bland Live On Beale Street CD (1998)
Funk Is In The House music CDs
$13.89 Recorded live at the Omni, Memphis, Tennessee on April 11, 1996.
Bland was a member (along with B. B. King) of the legendary early-'50s blues commune the Beale Streeters, so this excellent late-'90s live album is something of a homecoming for the man described herein by the M.C. as the World's Greatest Blues Singer. Backed by an excellent big band, Bland runs through a nicely chosen program of his early hits--blues classics like "Farther On Up the Road," "St. James Infirmary," and "I Pity the Fool"--plus some of his more recent material, including the ultimate paranoid blues "She's Putting Something ...

$13.29 Junior Kimbrough & The Soul Blues Boys: Junior Kimbrough (vocals, guitar); Garry Burnside (bass); Kenny Malone (drums).
If Junior Kimbrough's hypnotic, modal guitar riffs and ghostly, soul-drenched voice, which simultaneously drive and float through tracks like "You Better Run" and "I Feel Alright," don't make you want to take off your shirt and run through the cotton fields guzzling moonshine and screeching at the moon like a banshee, then ALL NIGHT LONG might not ...
| | Lightnin Hopkins Best Of Lightning Hopkins CD (2001)
Funk Is In The House songs
$13.59 Contains tracks from Lightnin' Hopkins' sessions with Gold Star in the 1940s and his later 60's Arhoolie sessions.
Recorded in Houston, Texas and Berkeley, California between 1947-1950 and 1961-1969. Includes liner notes by Chris Strachwitz.
While it's probably impossible to fully pin down a best-of from a man who constantly reinvented his own songs, it's only fitting that Arhoolie release this, since Lightnin' Hopkins (or Lightning Hopkins, as he's called here) was the inspiration for Chris Strachwitz to start his label. And while ten of the cuts are culled from Hopkins' Arhoolie recordings, Strachwitz has dug deeper, going back to the bluesman's seminal cuts for the Texas-based ...

| | Tony Joe White Snakey CD (2002)
Funk Is In The House CD music
$14.69 Why Tony Joe White isn't spoken of in the same revered tones as J.J. Cale is a mystery as well as a crime. White invented a brand of greasy, funky, deeply soulful Louisiana bayou rock that's been quoted by everyone from the Neville Brothers and the Meters to Marvin Gaye to the Red Hot Chili Peppers to ZZ Top to Funkadelic to the Cramps to the Gun Club to the White Stripes. Mark Knopfler owes his entire guitar playing approach to White. OK, enough bitching. Snakey is the most aptly titled Tony Joe record in some time. Here that shadowy guitar style, with its serpentine leads and chunky, syncopated chords, catches a groove that is echoed by Little Troll Forrest's basslines punching through the pocket just ahead of Boom Boom Cohen's drumming. The songs -- whether it be "Feeling Snakey," ...
