A budget, 12-song collection taken from Gatemouth's three '80s era Rounder albums with an added bonus of a 10-minute version of "The Drifter," recorded live in Switzerland in 1982. A good starting point for anyone coming to this multi-talented artist. ~ Cub Koda

If there was ever a female voice that conveyed the diverse qualities of the fertile Austin, TX music scene, Toni Price would be on anyone's short list for the honors. On her second album she wraps her lazy, husky drawl around some terrific material, much of it penned by Gwil Owen who wrote or co-wrote seven of these 13 tunes. Price also utilizes the cream of the city's extensive crop of musical talent with drummers Barry Frosty Smith, Doyle Bramhall ,and Lisa Pankratz joining fiddler Champ Hood and guitarists Scrappy Jud Newcomb, Casper Rawls, David Grissom, and Derek O'Brien (who also produced) on a set that mixes country, folk, jazz, torch, blues, rock, and twang with an effortlessness unique to Austin's distinctive groove. As an interpreter, Price doesn't write her material but she owns it nonetheless. Between the release of his first solo album, Perpetual Burn, in 1988 and the making of this, his second, speed metal guitarist Jason Becker suffered one of the most devastating blows a human being can: he was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease), the incurable ailment that gradually renders its victims paralyzed. Perspective was recorded during the period when Becker was losing his ability to move, much less play the guitar, and thus marks a transition from his days of frantic fretboard work to less speedy playing and to writing music that is played by other musicians and by computer; much of the album was written on a Mackintosh and then executed by guest performers. The result is that Becker, being unable to produce his usual heavy metal performances, has turned to a more varied musical palette, allowing in a wide range of musical influences.
