MUSTACHES WILD includes a live track recorded at the Capitol Theater, Olympia, Washington.
The ability for one to incorporate mood swings into their musical creativity is apparent on the debut full-length by Washington's Karp. At the drop of a hat, they can go from slow and blistering to upbeat and pounding, all while remaining at a very low, heavy tone. Deeply influenced by Black Sabbath and the Melvins, Mustache Wild has the potential to be a very dark release with their very tongue-in-cheek lyrics on tracks like "13 Ways to a Cavity," where the vocalist repeats "It's going to hurt again" continually. Of course, this all depends on how serious the listener takes Karp. ~ Mike DaRonco
Karp: Chris (guitar); Jared (bass); Scott (drums).

Mustaches Wild album
$10.75 Released in 1991, the same year as Nirvana's NEVERMIND, the Melvins' BULLHEAD reveals why one of these lauded Washington State bands went on to massive fame, and the other remained--well, the Melvins. While Kurt Cobain was admittedly highly influenced by the Melvins, particularly the guitar work of frontman Buzz "King Buzzo" Osbourne, he took the elder group's heavy sound and ...

Mustaches Wild CD music
$12.49 The cartoon wrestling/boxing championship belt on the front cover says "heavy metal" boldly and without apology, and, on the band's second album, Karp does its damnedest to live up to such a claim. And it does -- hearing these songs makes many pretenders to the throne seem like the weak-ass cheese they are. Karp may have their indie background fully intact -- who wouldn't, with releases on K Records? -- but they know how to rock, or, perhaps more appropriately, rawk! Their ...

In the early '80s, many of the top metal acts of the past had either disbanded or soldiered on despite the loss of founding members. Deep Purple had officially disbanded in 1976, with only two original members present in the final lineup, but by 1984, the classic lineup of vocalist Ian Gillan, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, bassist Roger Glover, drummer Ian Paice, and keyboardist Jon Lord had reunited. Responsible for such classics as MACHINE HEAD and MADE IN JAPAN, the group was considered amongst metal's elite, and judging from its first comeback album, 1984's PERFECT STRANGERS, DEEP PURPLE hadn't lost its magic touch in the slightest.
The album was a major worldwide hit, going platinum in the U.S., and spawning ...

| | Untamed Gimme, Gimme CD (2001) Singles & Unissued Rarities
Mustaches Wild album
$15.65 Recorded in England in the 1960's. Includes liner notes by Jon Mills.
Both sides of all four of the singles the Untamed recorded for producer Shel Talmy, as well as no less than a dozen unreleased singles and some 1966 jingles they did for Radio London, comprise this exemplary overview of this minor but talented mod band's work. Indeed, the only flaw is the absence of their 1964 Decca debut single, "So Long"/"Just Wait" (available on the obscure various-artists anthology Untamed and Innocent). The Untamed occupied an unusual niche in the mid-'60s British mod rock scene: jazzy, but not quite as jazzy as Georgie Fame, but certainly not as much straight-ahead rock as the Who or the Small Faces. They executed this unusual balancing act well on most of their singles, and the unreleased material is of a surprisingly high standard, whether originals in the same mold as the singles ("I'm Miserable") or covers of more explicitly jazz and pop tunes ("Evening," "Young Girl of Sixteen"). A real find is ...

| | Alice Cooper Dirty Diamonds CD (2005) Digipak
Mustaches Wild music CDs
$10.95 Apparently, the return to 1970s-era form on 2003's THE EYES OF ALICE COOPER wasn't a one-shot deal. On 2005's DIRTY DIAMONDS, Cooper continues the earlier release's straight-up hard-rock vibe. (Even the covers of both albums--focusing on the shock rocker's makeup-caked eyes--are strikingly similar.) Cooper's patented mix of sleaze and horror is as reliable as ever, with the revved-up "Woman of Mass Distraction" and the giddy "You Make Me Wanna" playing off the lurching "Run Down the Devil" and the bluesy, morbid "Zombie Dance."
The softer side of the man formerly known as Vincent Furnier is revealed on "The Saga of Jesse Jane," a humorous, slightly twangy tune where Cooper trades his signature raspy voice for a fuller croon, and a surprisingly tender take on the Left Banke's "Pretty Ballerina." Of course, the bulk of DIRTY DIAMONDS consists of energetic, guitar-heavy rock songs. One of the most shocking aspects of Cooper is how--more than three decades into his recording career--he sounds as invigorated as ever.
